TA Gaming Stats - May 5th to 11th 2014

By Chewie, 4 years ago
This report is for the period May 5th to May 11th 2014.

Welcome all to this week's Stats, which sees a small selection of new releases make a minor impact. I think we're all still holding out for the likes of Watch_Dogs to have the biggest impact, though. This week, the weather here in the TA treehouse has taken a turn for the toasty, which is something I can tell you is rather uncomfortable for someone covered in fur. As a result, I've done a spot of selective shaving to try and cool off. Unfortunately, this sort of thing was roughly the end result. When I got home, my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, found it all very hilarious. But I had the last laugh.

Games Started
28,860 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 42,423 games between them (1,950 different games).

The second title from the ID@Xbox program, through which independent developers can self-publish their games to the One, released this week in the form of Nutjitsu. Despite only being (officially) available in the US, the game managed to pull in nearly 850 starters. Whether this is particularly good on TA because the game is both cheap (under $7) and easy (over 56% of players have the full 1000GS), or because there aren't that many new titles to choose from, or if it's just popular in general, is unknown. Regardless, it shows that the program potentially has legs and it'll be interesting to see how many more of these independent games make the table. It doesn't quite do as well as last week's new release, Child of Light (Xbox One), which maintains first place despite dropping over two thirds of its numbers from over 3,000 to under 1,000. Last week's other new release, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Xbox One), slips from third to fifth and loses half its numbers to only just over 250 starters. Not great numbers for a second week.

On the 360, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 mirrors its One version in numbers by similarly dropping by half to around 250 starters, this time dropping from first to fifth. This week's new release doesn't do much better though, with RPG Bound by Flame getting fewer than 300 starters in fourth. The game's title got me curious about whether it is possible to actually bind someone by flames, so I experimented with one of my Statisticles, Guywain. Turns out no, no it definitely isn't possible. Especially when fur is involved.

On the sale side of things, two discounted titles prove popular, with Fable Anniversary and Transformers: War For Cybertron popping up in sixth and eighth place with between 170 and 200 starters.

On the Arcade, "Games with Gold" freebie Dust: An Elysian Tail continues its reign, dropping 7,300 to 4,400 starters, above the previous offering, Deadlight, which drops from 2,500 to 1,000.

The new release of the week, Peggle 2, manages a healthy 740 starters in fourth, although that's well under the 5,200 starters the One version managed on its release back in December. Last week's new release, Child of Light, almost drops off the bottom of the table in tenth place after over halving its starters from 350 to 150.

Like on Retail, the discounted Arcade titles this week prove pretty popular, with Sacred Citadel, Fez and Pool Nation taking fifth, sixth and eighth places with between 200 and 300 starters.

Finally we get some decent numbers on WP with the wildly popular Wordament Snap Attack (WP) pulling in over 2,700 starters in its release week, way more than the majority of titles on the consoles. Like binding with flame, I also experimented with snap attacks on one of my Statisticles, Pontius, which involved seeing how he fared in an alligator enclosure. It turned out, not very well. I can't remember what I was trying to determine with that one, but I learnt how much alligators enjoy the company of Ewoks. Previous deal freebie Rabbids Big Bang (WP) slips down the table from first to fourth as it drops from 460 to under 100 starters. This week's deal title, Rocket Riot (WP), doesn't prove hugely popular in sixth with 60 starters. Although, that could be because it's already been on offer a fair few times already.

The W8 version of Wordament Snap Attack (Win 8) does similarly well, although it pulls in under half the starters than the WP version with over 1,100. With no LIVE enabled deal title this week, the rest of the table is simply the usual Microsoft freebies and other assorted free-to-play staples.

Games Completed
7,505 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 9,966 games between them (1,279 different games).

The current roughly 50% completion percentage I mentioned earlier for Nutjitsu is reflected here with around 400 players completing it in its launch week. It still sits behind Child of Light, which doubles its completions from 320 to 640 this week. Below those two bigger hitters, recent DLC continues to boost the completions for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One), Ryse: Son of Rome and https://www.trueachievements.com/Peggle-2-Xbox-One/achi....htm.

This is getting crazy. Dark Souls II has now been the most completed game on site for umpteen (i.e. a bunch) weeks running. It doesn't show too many signs of letting up either, as it maintains comfortably over 100 completions, only dropping by 20 from last week.

Last week's new release, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, turns up in fourth with over 50 completions, even though the One version doesn't appear, despite roughly similar numbers. Interestingly, at this moment, more players have finished the 360 version the One version (100 vs 86), despite more players having started the latter (1,017 vs 1,115), meaning the 360 version has a higher 9.83% completion percentage compared to the One's 7.71%.

Although Dust ups its completions form under 100 to over 400, pushing it from fourth to second, its still not enough to challenge the easy completion of Deadlight, which does see a drop from 840 to 540. The Child of Light completions see a small boost from around 40 to just under 60, but its enough to see the game go from bottom of the table to eighth place.

Despite being such a big new starter, Wordament Snap Attack doesn't make the completed table. Although, that's probably more down to the game currently having a pesky unobtainable. Instead we continue to get the big three, Angry Birds Rio (WP), Shark Dash (WP) and Rabbids Big Bang continue to lead over the standard fare.

It's a similar story here as Snap Attack on Windows 8 shares the achievements and thus the unobtainable woes of the WP version. That leaves us staring at the same old titles with very similar numbers.

Achievements Won
67,745 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 750,339 achievements online between them (51,957 different achievements).

Despite all the easy Nutjitsu achievements, not one manages to challenge Child of Light for a spot on the top ten.

Top Xbox One Achievements Won

The four Spidey achievements from last week drop off the table, leaving Titanfall to resume its reign, above various Hitman: Absolution and South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) offerings.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Achievements Won

It's no big surprise to see Dust continuing its clean sweep status, with the same ten achievements as last week almost in the same exact order.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Achievements Won

The ten easiest Snap Attack achievements sweep the board, naturally.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

It's an almost exact copy on W8 as WP, with the same achievements in the same order, with a similar distribution, just with less than half the numbers.

Although Dust keeps Action-Adventure going strong, its lead slips slightly this week, dropping from over 7 million to under 6.7. Shooter and Role-Playing remain solid, but Nutjitsu sends Action up over the 2 million mark, which pushes it over Platformer into fourth. The double dip of Wordament gives Puzzle a big boost, from under 680,000 to nearly 1.2 million, although its only enough to push it up from eighth to seventh place. Finally, Vehicular Combat jumps into ninth place from off the bottom of the table. I hear you say, "But, Chewie, you haven't mentioned any Vehicular Combat games this week". Well you're right, but the boost is down to a new update complete with achievements making its way to World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition, which didn't get enough completions or achievements won to put it on those tables, but still pulled in enough points to boost the genre significantly.

Total TrueAchievements won by Genre
  • Action-Adventure6,634,715
  • Shooter4,550,752
  • Role-Playing3,624,850
  • Action2,449,750

  • Puzzle1,186,847

That's all for now folks. Next week sees a dearth of Retail releases, but the Arcade does get some timey-wimey fun, so I'll be investigating time travel in the stats, mostly by sending a Statisticle back in time to make a few minor adjustments and see what happens. I'm sure it'll be fun and utterly harmless!
