Fans of the dark and brutal Metro series might be pleased to hear that the franchise is being brought to life on the Xbox One console in the form of Redux versions of the games. However, this will not be simply an HD reworking of the previous titles as both Deep Silver and 4A Games are quick to point out.
Metro 2033 Redux will feature the original title, Metro 2033, completely reworked and rebuilt using the latest iteration of the 4A Engine, which promises to bring a number of graphical and gameplay enhancements to the title. Visuals will be completely remastered with advanced lighting, dynamic weather, more detailed characters with improved animation, more dynamic destruction, and improved smoke, fire and particle effects. Additionally the gameplay has been improved, with more advanced enemy AI, improved combat and stealth mechanics, and better weapon handling with more responsive and intuitive controls. The developers have also including some of the signature features from Metro Last Light, such as the 'mask wipe' mechanic, weapon customization, and silent kills and take-downs.
Similarly, Metro: Last Light Redux, featuring the sequel title Metro: Last Light, has also received the next-gen face-lift and gameplay improvements, including new melee animations. The developer has also listened to the fans and has included the requested 'Check Watch' and 'Check Inventory' features. Finally, the title will include all the previously released Season Pass DLC content, representing a further ten hours plus of gameplay.
If all this wasn't enough for fans of the series, the developers have also taken into consideration the way that players approach the game:
With METRO REDUX, players now have the choice to experience both Metro games the way they want with the introduction of two unique ‘Play Styles.’
Those who favoured the more survival horror oriented gameplay of Metro 2033 can play both campaigns in the ‘Survival’ Play Style, a fraught slow-burn fight for survival with limited resources, deadlier enemy AI, and slower reload speeds. Those who enjoyed the more action oriented gameplay of Metro: Last Light can try the ‘Spartan’ Play Style, providing Artyom with a powerful set of combat skills and more plentiful resources.
In addition, the legendary Ranger Mode returns to both games, providing the most immersive and challenging experience as the HUD is stripped away and hardcore rules apply.
Both titles will be available separately in individual redux versions, or bundled together in one package, entitled Metro Redux.
According to the publisher, Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux will each be available separately as a digital download for Xbox One, costing $24.99 / €19.99 / £15.99. Alongside the digital release, a boxed compilation containing both games, entitled METRO REDUX will be available for $49.99 / €39.99 / £34.99.
All the titles are expected to be released sometime in the summer although the exact release date is still to be confirmed.
