TA Gaming Stats - July 14th to 20th 2014

By Chewie, 4 years ago
This report is for the period July 14th to July 20th 2014.

Welcome to the Stats for the third week of July here on TA. After a fairly busy set of weeks on the release front and some big sales to shake things up, things quiet down a bit this week. The downtime has allowed me and my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, to spend some time relaxing. Yes, I know I was just on holiday for a couple of weeks, but holidays can be stressful and sometimes all you want to do is get back and look at some comfortably stable numbers.

Games Started
37,085 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 57,641 games between them (2,127 different games).

Passing the halfway point of its freeness, current Games with Gold title Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (Xbox One) drops by half of its starters this week from 4,000 to around 2,000. It still easily maintains first place above the previous freebie, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood (Xbox One), which maintains steadily around 800 starters. Jumping up the table from fifth to third, Wolfenstein: The New Order (Xbox One) goes from 480 to over 720 starters thanks to an unexpected weekend sale on id Software classics and their sequels to celebrate the unveiling of the new DOOM. Similarly, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One) gets a boost from off the table straight into fourth with over 570 starters thanks to the week's Deals with Gold.

Like last week's table the Ultimate Games Sale makes its mark. This time, BioShock Infinite (Xbox 360) proves the most popular discounted title, claiming almost 430 starters. Payday 2 and Split/Second are also popular choices in second and third with between 330 and 350 starters. In sixth, Painkiller Hell & Damnation takes over 260 starters, above South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) in eighth with 230. Last week's most popular discounted title, Portal 2, takes a dive to fifth place with over 270 starters, whilst other sales titles from last week, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Dishonored settle for ninth and tenth places.

The new 360 "Games with Gold" title BattleBlock Theater proves a very popular one with over 10,200 TA'ers picking it up and starting it in its first week of freeness. Compare those numbers to this week's new release, Magic: The Gathering - DotP 2015, which takes almost 1,300 starters in third. Although if it weren't for the Games with Gold program, that would be enough to put it in first.

Peggle 2 makes it onto the table from this week's sales, in fifth with almost 520 starters, whilst The Walking Dead: Season Two goes from fifth to seventh with its Season Pass on offer and the discounted DuckTales Remastered (Arcade) drops from third to eighth with 240 starters. Unfortunately, new release Abyss Odyssey is nowhere to be found.

I'm assuming that the sudden boost in players of The Sims FreePlay (WP) is due to it being included in the recent list of titles that were updated to allow them to play on phones with 512MB of memory. 116 new starters help put the game in second place, above current sale title Mirror's Edge (WP) in third and previous sale title Halo: Spartan Assault (WP) in fourth.

Top Windows Phone Games Started

Although it managed over 500 starters in its general release week last week, Microsoft Jigsaw (Win 8) manages to surpass those numbers this week, hitting over 630. That puts it at more starters than the rest of the table combined.

Games Completed
7,972 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 10,852 games between them (1,306 different games).

Guacamelee and Max continue to pull in the most completions with Valiant Hearts also making a valiant effort to stay around 200 in third. Despite some fairly high ratio achievements, the sheer volume of players put Battlefield 4 (Xbox One) on the table in fourth with nearly 150 completions of the new "Dragon's Teeth" DLC.

Top Xbox One Games Completed

With all the sales action, the fairly easy completion of the discounted South Park boosts it up to first with 70 completions. Similarly, the discounted DLC for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim puts it in second with 60 completions, pushing prior number one Dark Souls down to fourth, although there's only one completion separating the second and third, and third and fourth spots. The Battlefield 4 DLC also puts the game on the 360 table, but only just. It takes ninth place with only one more completion than the tenth place spot.

The finale of The Wolf Among Us continues its impact, although the numbers see a considerable drop from over 2,300 to under 740. With the achievements released for "Episode Four" but the episode not out, The Walking Dead: Season Two goes conspicuously absent, but will return in a big way next week. Last week only two sales titles made the table, but this week we get three with Assassin's Creed Liberation HD, Bastion (Xbox 360) and The Bridge taking sixth to eighth places.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Games Completed

The numbers and places here remain pretty much the same as none of the updated titles make the table, inlcuding The Sims, nor the discounted Mirror's Edge.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

Apart from Microsoft Solitaire Collection (Win 8) and Microsoft Mahjong (Win 8) switching places at the top, this table also remains very familiar.

Top Windows 8 Games Completed

Achievements Won
79,657 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 1,201,673 achievements online between them (59,134 different achievements).

The two easiest "Dragon's Teeth" achievements take the top spots. There's a significant drop off of players who have earned the other achievements in the DLC after these two, so the rest don't make the table. That leaves Guacamelee to clean up.

Top Xbox One Achievements Won

It's a similar tale at the top of the 360 table but with more variety underneath. The three easiest Bioshock Infinite achievements are spread in third, sixth and tenth, whilst Payday 2 claims three spots and Dark Souls and Split/Second take one each.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Achievements Won

Battleblock keeps the Wolf at the door and claims the a clean sweep on the table.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Achievements Won

Temple Run, Mirror's Edge and Sims share the table, with the latter two claiming two spots each.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Last week, Jigsaw and Sudoku shared the table almost 50/50, but this week Jigsaw fills in almost all the pieces, leaving Sudoku only able to take tenth place.

Top Windows 8 Achievements Won

With the numbers continuing to drop for Guacamelee, Action-Adventure takes a hit, going from 13.7 million to 11 million, but it still retains its lead in first. Shooter does close the gap a bit thanks to titles like Bioshock Infinite and Payday 2 getting boosts from sales and the Battlefield 4 DLC. It goes from 8.8 million to 9 million in second. Battleblock Theatre's freeness helps give Platformer a boost in numbers but not in position, as it retains fifth place behind Role-Playing and Action. Card & Board pops up in tenth thanks to Microsoft Jigsaw's efforts.

That's all for now. Next week will probably be a little quiet too, although we'll see the latest episode of TWD: S2 taking Arcade by storm. Will new release Might and Magic: Duel of Champions - Forgotten Wars also make an impact? Find out next week. *Curious, Chewie checks the game's page and sees that it has 54 players a week after release* Ah, maybe not.
