It's been a long, long summer, gamers, and it's been far too long since we've had an Achievement Preview Spotlight. That injustice is being remedied this week with our focus on Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition
. As the APS moves forward, our goal is to feature more games and DLC packs and have them run on the Monday before release. As always, if you have suggestions for games and DLC packs you'd like to see featured, you can let us know in the comments!
This week's game might, on the surface, seem cheap. "It's basically Diablo III
(which we featured in an APS last August
) with a new coat of paint and a new chapter." Fortunately, this couldn't be further from the truth... at least to our community. The Ultimate Evil Edition

) feature new
achievement lists and are stackable. Let's dive in to see what's new and exciting in a return to Sanctuary.
BE WARNED - Those who have not played Diablo III may want to steer clear of the achievement list as it does contain some plot spoilers.
Let's start out with the basics, this new incarnation of Diablo
features 43 achievements and zero secrets (again, this list DOES contain some spoilers), so you can fully peruse at your leisure. While Diablo III
may have only had one really grindy achievement (All That Glitters
, which required you to pick up five million gold), this new list does contain some achievements that will be serious
grinds. In addition to a big time commitment, there is a nice mix of achievements that highlight the new features offered as well as some traditional achievements for passing plot points.
First up is an achievement that every Diablo
player probably wishes were in the game, but might not have fully thought out.
Crashing, rolling, and decimating objects is a time-honored tradition in the series, but racking up a streak of 50 objects may take some planning, patience, and strict execution.
Speaking of patience, this next achievement may take quite a bit, but can be somewhat
Since this new edition of Diablo III
will allow for cross-gen and cross-platform saves
, you'll be able to import any and all characters you've played in the previous edition. If you're anything like me, you've already got a level 60 character or two sitting around just waiting to get those additional ten levels. That being the case, this achievement shouldn't
be too taxing.
This one, on the other hand...
Again, you may already have all of the original characters leveled up somewhat and ready for transfer, but with the new Crusader class being introduced, you're going to have a grind ahead of you.
The "punishment" doesn't end there, though. Let's REALLY get sadistic... since this is Diablo
Let me tell you something that was not
fun; grinding a character to level 30 in Hardcore mode in the game's original release
. For those not in the know, Hardcore mode basically means that if you die, you're dead (obviously), and your character goes bye-bye. There are few things more frustrating than getting cheap killed on one of the plains and losing a mid-twenties character and several hours of progress. Now multiply that up from level 30 to level 70
. While raising the difficulty bumps up XP gain and using items like the Infernal Helm buffs XP considerably, it is always a measured bet: do you play it fast and loose at a lower difficulty or slow and safe at a higher one? Either way, this one could be a pain in the couch.
In addition to a new Act and a new playable character (the Crusader), this new edition of the game also adds new features like "Nephalem Rifts" and bounties. This last achievement is one that (I've been told) could be the sneakiest, grindiest achievement of the bunch.

, for a bit more insight on these bounties.
Nothing is likely to prove more "grindy" than this one. Bounties are randomly generated quests available to you after completing the main storyline and average anywhere from 5 to 15+ minutes each to complete. Making a whole 500 of these to be a potentially 80+ hour venture in of itself. Completionists beware!
Other achievements of note include pops for beating Diablo
in Hardcore mode (which you'll probably have to do once or twice for the "Above & Beyond (Hardcore)" achievement, finishing a Nephalem Rift within 15 minutes
, and equiping all inventory slots with Legendary items that have a minimum required level of 70 or higher
. For those on the Xbox One, there is also a singular challenge for beating Act V
All of those things being said, let's get real... gamers who play Diablo
LOVE grinding Diablo
, and a grind isn't so much a challenge as it is an invitation to keep playing
. One of the things that eventually disappointed me about the achievement list in the original, console release is that there was little achievement-related motivation to experiment with all of the characters. Ultimate Evil Edition
definitely fixes that and then some. While none of these achievements look impossible at this time, they are a time commitment. If you're a completionist, definitely expect to invest quite a bit of time clearing out this new edition... and remember to eat, sleep, bathe, and see the sun every once in a while.
