As part of this year's Gamescom, Ubisoft brought a selection of screens and a Q&A for their upcoming Kinect title, Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show, which creates an interactive version of the Nickelodeon TV series, Rabbids Invasion, in a similar vein to titles like Kinect Sesame Street TV and Kinect Nat Geo TV.

What is the connection between the Rabbids TV series broadcasted on Nickelodeon and France Télévisions and Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show?
Rabbids Invasion is the TV show produced by Ubisoft Motion Pictures with the participation of France Télévisions. The show has been broadcasted on Nickelodeon since August 2013 in the US and subsequently in France and thru France Télévisions. Today the TV show is broadcasted in 25 countries around the world and has been viewed over 300 million times. Rabbids Invasion is also at the heart of Ubisoft’s first Interactive TV program for a good reason... The episodes offer great raw material for imagining how people might become a more active participant of their favorite universes. Kids just want to do like the Rabbids do... They’re all about physical comedy and they live in a world without taboo, where everything is an excuse for wild experimentation and mischievous fun. Like crazy mimes, the Rabbids tell stories through actions...sort of like players! This is great content and narrative on which to design fun and natural interactions that can enrich the TV experience. With Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show we offer a brand new way of watching TV, viewers are not spectators only, they now become actors and actively participate, get rewarded, compete and enjoy a fun time with family and friends. This is TV you can play!

Why would people be willing to interact with a TV show that is traditionally passive?
Two of the Kids’ favorite entertainment activities are watching TV and playing videogames, and we know that new generations are becoming more and more multitask every day and have access to new technologies... Based on these facts and in addition to the worldwide success of the Rabbids TV show, we came to the idea of offering a hybrid (interactive) experience where Kids can now Watch & Play their favorite episodes. Today there are a bunch of kids’ shows that already prompt them to react and participate, but for now as fun as that is, it’s a one way street... Your kids can laugh, point, say-out-loud to the screen, but they receive no instant feedback or acknowledgement. And yet the invitation to participate is there and because of the strong narrative it keeps you very entertained. Now, we can support natural interaction, with the hardware, tech and design that creates good conditions for a new interactive TV experience to emerge. It has to be super reactive, super natural (voice, movement, etc), and very easy to use. And this is what you will get with the new generation of consoles. The gameplay is adapted and embedded to each episode, making the whole experience really accessible and keeping an engaging flow. The game highlights key elements that we are sure kids will enjoy, like humor, story-telling, CG Characters and a great variety of gameplay that can be played in a Social-competitive mode with up to 4 players (on XboxOne and PS4) and up to 2 players (on Xbox 360).

What makes Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show different from previous Rabbids titles?
Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show is a new genre for the Rabbids brand, the game is fully based on the TV show meaning that we use the same HD characters and the same narrative. The game offers a hybrid (interactive) experience where Kids can now Watch & Play their favorite episodes. This allow them to discover and enjoy a brand new way of watching TV, switching from passive entertainment to active yet participative entertainment, making users become part of the TV show.

What are the technical evolutions that allow this to work?
All the tech and design that contributed to make the interactions so natural, easy, immediate, even for kids or non-players were critical. Say you want to answer a question or a quick fun logical puzzle while the show is actually playing. If you have to grab a remote or controller, navigate a laggy interface, it breaks it all. Or as a designer you are forced to freeze the show and kill part of the story rhythm, or the user probably miss his shot. Now with Kinect and/or PS4 camera you can point or just say LEFT, and you’re good. You can show the door, sing, dance etc etc...

How many episodes will be available?
The game includes a selection of 20 interactive episodes plus one add - on DLC episode at launch. More episodes will be available via DLC for purchase on Microsoft Xbox Live and Sony PSN market places.

What are the key features of the game?
Every episode has different gameplay possibilities that are adapted to the narrative. Kids will have fun with over 400 crazy activities using motion and voice recognition gameplay. They will also be able to unlock augmented reality capsules where they can interact with the Rabbids and capture memorable moments using the Kinect and the PS4 camera technology.
