Nearly two months ago, the servers closed for good on GFWL title Age of Empires Online. If you're struggling to sate that real time strategy itch then you may be interested to hear about the latest title in the Age of Empires franchise. Developed by Smoking Gun Interactive, Age of Empires: Castle Siege is an upcoming title for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

Using touch-screen controls, players will be able to build an empire that they must keep safe. Fortify, collect resources and train an army if you want to be successful. Sending your units into battle is as simple as dragging a path on the touch screen, but don't forget that defence is also important if you want to thwart your opponent's attacks.

If you're struggling with your standard troops, call upon a hero and deploy them instead. Historical figures, such as Richard the Lionheart and Charlemagne, can be unlocked and called upon to fight for you.

Players begin with a choice of six civilizations from the Medieval period: Britons, Byzantines, Franks, Kievan Rus, Saracens and the Teutonic Order. Each of these civilizations has "upwards of six" cultural units, as well as cavalry and other equipment.

There is also the option to relive ten battles from historical lore, such as the Siege of Marienburg and the Fall of Constantinople.

Players can team up with their Xbox LIVE friends to form an alliance. Once you have recruited your allies, take on other alliances and earn the "‘crown count’" and a spot near the top of the leaderboards.

The title will allow for cross-platform play between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices, so you can battle your friend on a Windows Phone while you use your PC. If you have multiple Windows devices, you will also be able to pick up your game on any of these devices as all of your gameplay progress will be stored to your gamertag.

Join the siege when Age of Empires: Castle Siege is released next month.
