Let's Talk with UnscathedGrunt

By Marc Hollinshead, 4 years ago
Hello to you all! Welcome back for some more interviewing fun. This week, our guest is UnscathedGrunt, a gamer who will stop at nothing to tell us all about the adventures of a certain chief. Let's give a big TA welcome to UnscathedGrunt!

Marc: Gamertags almost always tell something about their owners. Tell us about yours.
Interview 1

Where to begin….. Well I’ve always been a fan of the Halo series and military shooters so having Grunt in there was a dual meaning for me, and as for Unscathed, it was generally because I always seemed to be the best out of my friends when it came to multiplayer back before I got Xbox Live. (I was also known as ‘The Smiling Assassin’, but I liked UnscathedGrunt better haha. I still have “The assassin strikes again" yelled every time we LAN though haha).

Marc: What about your signature? (skip if you don’t have one)

On all my forum accounts I tend to use quotes from video games that I believe are well written. For example,
"We all make choices, but in the end our choices make us."
- Andrew Ryan (BioShock (Xbox 360)).

But on here I have:
"Memories — even important ones — don’t come back to us whenever we want them to. But that doesn’t mean the memories are gone."
Sora (KH:CoM)

Marc: How long have you been gaming?

I have been gaming since I was….. geez, younger than I care to remember haha. I used to play on our old Snes and then N64 and PlayStation. I have so many good memories on those consoles. I still have them ready to go on in my cabinet, just got to plug them in.

Marc: Do others in your family game, or are you a first-generation gamer?

I was the first to really game in my family and my Dad has started a bit more recently, though he used to play PC games every now and then. My brother also games but plays more of the sports games like NBA 2K and FIFA.

Marc: What do your parents/significant other/friends have to say about your gaming?

My Dad is a little jealous about how easy it is for me to do haha. My Mum on the other hand…… She’s not a fan as she thinks it distracts me too much, but that is exactly my reason for gaming (will get into that a bit later though).

Marc: Assuming you’re not a professional gamer, what’s your day job?

Currently I’m a full time student studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts: Digital Media which can lead to all sorts of career paths. I’m looking more at a career in video editing which leads to one of my other current jobs. I do contract video edits and am currently on contract for a couple of jobs. As for general employ, I just work nightfill at a supermarket. I don’t really enjoy that all that much.

Marc: I work in a supermarket, so I can empathise. Crappy isn't even the word.

What other hobbies do you enjoy?

Hobby wise I like to plan and write for machinimas and other things. I only have one major Machinima project finished unfortunately as I start writing them and then stop due to other commitments. It did get me into uni though, but I would like to remake it with the skills I now have.

Marc: Tell us about your home life – parents, spouse, children, significant other, animal companions?
Interview 2

I currently live at home with my Mum, Dad, younger Brother and Sister. I’m the only introvert in my family though so it can be a bit tough for me to speak with the rest of the family.

Marc: Of what real life achievement are you most proud? Would you give us some details?

Now this is where I get into the reasoning for my gaming. I hope you are prepared for a bit of a story. During high school I was bullied a lot, and even had my jaw broken. This led to many different things, one being pointed out by a friend who was going through the same kind of thing. What I’m talking about is depression. I hated going to school and lost all motivation to do anything. On top of that I couldn’t continue on my initial career aim of becoming a pilot due to physical injuries.

For anyone else that has gone through this would know how hard this can be. I suffered with it for years before getting it to a….. manageable condition. This took quite a while and I ended up doing it by playing video games for the most part. I would find a well written story and just immerse myself in it. Yes it was a distraction but it allowed me to calm myself and ironically bring me back to earth.

THAT is my most proud real life achievement.

Marc: I always admire people who make it through tough times like that. I can't imagine how hard it must have been, but I'm happy to see you made it through to the other side!

What’s your favorite game of all time on any console? What makes it special?

A little cliché, but my favourite is Final Fantasy X on the PS2 as it was the first game where I completely lost myself in the story. After that was Fable on Xbox for much of the same reason, haha.

Marc: Do you remember the first game you played? What’s your fondest memory of it?

The first game I can remember playing is Donkey Kong Country. My fondest memories are of just riding around on the other animals and just messing around in the game.

Marc: If some evil spell allowed you to own only a single game for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?

Halo 2. Such a good story and fun multiplayer. So many good memories playing it with friends.

Marc: What part of the world do you live in? If I were to visit, what sights would I have to see?

I live in Adelaide, South Australia. In and around Adelaide we have a lot of nice wineries to visit and do tours. During March and a few months following we have our annual Fringe Festival and a few others which are a huge showing of culture here in Adelaide.

Marc: I am 100% confident in saying that where you live is definitely more interesting than where I live. I'd certainly take a tour!

Any games you regret putting on your gamertag?

Any game that I haven’t been able to sit through fully, but most notably, Grand Theft Auto IV and Terminator Salvation. It’s not that Grand Theft Auto IV is a bad game, it’s just that I couldn't sit there and play it. But Terminator Salvation is just bad. (No Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth for me :D)

Marc: If you were forced to change your gamertag, what would you change it to? What does the new tag reflect about you?

I would probably choose something that could be abbreviated as easily as my current one. As for an exact name, I’m not sure.

Marc: Tell us about your gamer pic. Why did you choose that one?

My gamer pic is nothing special. I just dressed up my avatar in a bunch of different game based gear and activated the prop, haha. Nothing special about it at all.

Marc: Do you have any particular gaming pet peeves?

People who "teamkill" you because you picked up a certain weapon or vehicle. It really frustrated me in Halo 3 when I pick up a sniper or jump in a banshee and someone would kill me because they didn't get it.

Marc: It's reasons like this that I'm not a fan of multiplayer. Give me a singleplayer only game any day!

What upcoming game are you most looking forward to?

I’m torn between both Destiny and the Halo: Master Chief Collection. Unfortunately I won’t have a One in time for Destiny.

Marc: What game are you most proud of completing? Why?

Either the Mass Effect series or Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 (Xbox 360). So much grinding, but I hold a score of 168-52 over my friend because of it.

Marc: What single Xbox achievement are you most proud of? Why?

Halo: ReachA Monument to All Your SinsThe A Monument to All Your Sins achievement in Halo: Reach worth 290 pointsComplete each Campaign Mission on Legendary - alone.

I honestly found it to be one of the most challenging achievements in a long time that wasn't collectible based.

Marc: In a slightly different vein, do you have a favorite achievement? One perhaps that you just really enjoyed attaining?

Final Fantasy XIII-2Secret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in Final Fantasy XIII-2 worth 63 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement

I loved just seeing all the different ending types the game had and just trying to figure out which combination of paradox areas led to what ending.

Marc: If you found yourself dropped into a video game, which video game character would you most want to have your back?

Master Chief, of course. Who wouldn’t want to have the ultimate space warrior with you, Am I right?

Marc: In the same scenario, what character/creature would you most/least like to see headed your way?

I would love to see Handsome Jack headed my way. He was a loved character but he was still a hated one as well. (I also got a signature on my copy of Borderlands 2 from the man himself).
Interview 4

Marc: Any characters you would like seen thrown into video game hell?

All the enemies in Demons' Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls II. Damn them. DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!

Marc: Noooo, don't say that! We Souls fans love those challenging enemies! Well, maybe when they aren't murdering us...

Ever had any bad experiences online? How did you handle it?

I’ve had so many I’ve lost track. One that stood out was when I was playing Doubles in Halo 3 and my mate and I were able to beat the other doubles team. They sent us a message after the game saying how we were noobs for using the power weapons on the map and proceeded to send abusive messages to us. To be fair we only won 25-6….. :P I sent them a message back saying “I’m sorry you feel that way about us playing the game the way it was designed. If you feel that we have shamed you in anyway we would be willing to give you a rematch.” They accepted and continued to get schooled by us for the next 3 games in a row.

Marc: Do you prefer single player or multi-player?

Despite all the multiplayer stories I’ve mentioned, I do much rather a good singleplayer story. Something I can just sit back and play without someone screaming in my ear every few seconds about me having killed them.

Marc: Do you have a favorite group of friends you like to play with? If so, how did you meet?

I do and we actually all met online. We just played together one day and haven’t stopped since. We make a pretty good team on Halo as well. Not the best mind you but we each have our roles and specialty weapons.

Marc: If you could have a multiplayer session with anyone in the world, whom would you choose? Why?

The original cast from Rooster Teeth. I am a huge fan of their work and would love to sit down, meet them all and just game with them. (My dream is to actually work for them one day (but shush, don’t tell anyone :P)

Marc: You've just made it public now. So you kinda just told everyone anyway wink. Who knows, one of them could be reading!

Marc: What other consoles do you own? What are your favorites on those platforms?

SNES – Donkey Kong Country.
N64 – Goldeneye.
Playstation – Final Fantasy 7
PS2 – Final Fantasy X/ Kingdom Hearts
PS3 – Valkyria Chronicles.
Xbox – Halo CE
Xbox 360 – Mass Effect series.
Nintendo 3DS – Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright.
Gameboy Color – Pokemon Red
Gameboy Advanced – Pokemon Ruby.

Marc: So...quite a bit then.

Have you ever had a game you really looked forward to that you were disappointed in when it finally arrived? Tell us about it.

Plenty. Most recent was Aliens Colonial Marines. That should say it all right? RIGHT?!

Marc: Tell us about your gaming set-up.

Interview 7

I have my PS3, 360 and PS2 permanently hooked up and soon my new desktop will be as well. All my game shelves are double stacked and I have more stored elsewhere. Full surround sound too.

Marc: Sounds like you're all set! And I see Mass Effect toys...GIMME!

How do you use TA? Tracking, walkthroughs, solutions, sessions?

The only thing I haven’t done on TA yet is a gaming session. Unfortunately I don’t have the time between uni and work.

Marc: Do you ever contribute solutions?

I have gone to a few times, but generally the ways I have earned achievements have already been posted and I don’t like to double post.

Marc: How has your gaming changed or evolved since coming to TA?

I’ve been able to increase my G-score much more since I joined, but I’ve also played a lot more games as I’ve been getting a bunch of cheap deals in GoD and in local stores.

Marc: What do you like and dislike most about the site?

I like being able to easily find solutions to achievements and easily being able to sort through the games on your G-card.
I dislike that some of the most vocal in the community don’t seem to like that others aren’t in it to play their way. For me just playing the games for the experience is good enough and if I enjoy the game, then I’ll achievement hunt.

Marc: How did you learn about TA? Have you signed up any friends to the website?

I can’t remember how I learnt about it but I have had 1 one friend sign up though.

Marc: Have you made friends here?

Unfortunately, no. Due to my lack of time to do some gaming sessions I haven’t really met anyone.

Marc: If you could have a game handcrafted just for you, what would your perfect game be?

The relationship, dialog trees and levelling of Mass Effect, with the gameplay and style of Halo. (I’m very much a Sci-fi geek).

Marc: Is there anything you’d like to see added to TA’s functionality?

Nothing that I can think of.

Marc: Why do you choose TA over other gaming sites?

Achievement Tracking. There is others that do it, but none as well as here.

Marc: Do you have a “claim to fame” in gaming? If so, what is it?

Before people started hacking the game and fudging the times, I was in the top 20 for a few tracks on Mario Kart Wii.

Marc: Is there anything in particular you want the TA community to know about you?

Marc: Is there anything I haven’t asked that you want to talk about?

Never be afraid to get help if you are ever feeling down. Even just talking to friends online can help. Also, despite what people and the media say, gaming is not bad. Just be yourself and enjoy what you enjoy.

Marc: Any shout-outs you want to make before we go?

I’d like to shout out to my mates ausy tyranid, SoliderCactus, J3nk0J1 and zXBI WinningXz for unknowingly helping me get through one of the hardest times of my life. (None of them are on this site however).

And there you have it, folks! Let's give a huge thank you to UnscathedGrunt for sharing a portion of his own life with us. Come back in two weeks time for our next guest, TakeTheToast.

Come back to see me and, you guessed it... let's talk. wave

I'd like to remind everyone that because of the huge waiting list for candidates, I am currently not taking any applications for the Community Interview. When some of the backlog has been worked through, I'll let you know. ~ Marc

To summarize Marc in two words, it would be "Christian Gamer." You will usually find him getting stuck into story heavy action-adventure games, RPG's and the odd quirky title when he isn't raving about Dark Souls and Mass Effect. Outside the world of gaming, Marc attends and helps out in his church on a regular basis and has a not-so thrilling job in a supermarket.
