TA Gaming Stats - September 8th to 14th 2014

By Chewie, 4 years ago
This report is for the period September 8th to September 14th 2014.

Welcome to this week's stats for TA, covering the second week of September and one of the biggest releases of the year so far. For the last few weeks, my Ewok helpers, the Statisticles, have been begging me to get them Destiny. It's been nothing but Warlocks this, Fallen that, Peter Dinklage something else. After a while of this begging, I had to remind them that they're already part of a major sci-fi franchise and getting involved with another one would just be a bad idea. I mean, look at Alien vs Predator.

Games Started
64,410 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 87,281 games between them (1,889 different games).

So, there's not much to see here as we get the same old titles and the same old numbers. Nah, just kidding, Destiny (Xbox One) happened. Minecraft: Xbox One Edition's over 14,600 starters last week was impressive and all, but Destiny takes that number and grinds it into dust by doubling it and then adding thousands more. It claims over 37,000 starters, which is over ten times the amount of the next title on the table and over three and a half times more than the other nine games combined. Big. Numbers.

After its EA Access trial debut last week, NHL 15 (Xbox One) gets a full release this week and manages to climb from eighth to third with 1,500 starters. On the rest of the table, some games were played by some people but, with numbers sliding below 500, I'm just not interested. Those 37,000 big ones have made me blow my number wad early. Do I have to keep going? Okay, fine.

On the 360, Destiny naturally doesn't compete with its new-gen sibling. However, for the console it does very well, pulling in almost 9,000 starters, which is more than some "Games with Gold" titles got in their first week of freeness, so that's something. Everything else trails below the 500 mark, but we get NHL 15 also making third here and other new release Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution grabbing sixth with 230 starters. Thanks to this week's sale, the discounted Borderlands 2 jumps up to fourth place with 380 starters whilst its predecessor Borderlands settles for ninth with 130.

Current "Games with Gold" freebie, Monaco: What's Yours is Mine, slips down from 4,400 to under 900 starters, although it still manages to retain the top spot thanks to all the other numbers being well under 300. With no new releases or XBLA sales, we're left with a mix of free-to-play, recent "Games with Gold" and always popular titles.

Keeping the top spot again is Tentacles: Enter the Mind (WP), but it has to share it this week with new entry Secrets and Treasure: The Lost Cities (WP), which makes the jump from W8 to WP with a soft release in Canada and Australia, and grabs 240 starters in the process. Another new release comes in the form of Terraria (WP), which makes a similar jump from XBLA to WP, taking fourth with 190 starters. We're being spoilt recently. Although it probably just seems that way because it's been a very long dry period.

Although recent sale offerings haven't graced the tables, this week's discounted Plants vs. Zombies (WP) does prove popular, taking third with over 200 starters.

Tentacles: Enter the Mind (Win 8) loses its grip on the top spot this week, slipping behind Microsoft Jigsaw (Win 8) and under 100 starters. Recent release Assassin's Creed Pirates (Win 8) also slips down, going from third to ninth and 85 to 35 starters.

Games Completed
6,249 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 8,037 games between them (1,204 different games).

Minecraft leaps from third to first this week as it goes from 140 to nearly 740 completions, putting it well above any other games on the table. That leaves last week's top two, Super T.I.M.E. Force (Xbox One) and Stick it To The Man, slipping into second and third. Completion numbers are down all across the table, with most games at under 100 and the bottom approaching 50. I guess people are too busy playing Destiny to be completing other stuff.

Last week's sales titles, Child of Light (Xbox One) and LocoCycle (Xbox One), manage to make the table in sixth and seventh thanks to both having easy completions; 42% of players have completed the former, whilst a big nearly 60% have completed the latter.

Recent sales title LEGO The Lord of the Rings again sits in the top spot, above other relatively easy popular and recently discounted titles.

The Walking Dead: Season Two makes another big drop in numbers this week, going from 1,700 to under 630, although it still sits comfortably in first. As the October server closure draws near, people continue to rush to complete Doritos Crash Course 2. This week, the game goes from eighth with 40 completions to fifth with 50. Similarly, Ascend: Hand of Kul appears in seventh with 40 completions as people try and complete it before the November shutdown. With the game's free-to-play grindiness, I have a feeling fewer people will make it to the end. I'd be interested to know what the difference between now and shut-down is, so I'm going to start "Ascend Watch", in which we track how many completions the game has from week to week. As of this moment, it sits at 811 (2.6%). Anyone want to take bets what next week's numbers look like? Will the game break 1,000 before shut-down?

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Games Completed

Proving an easy completion, especially if you have finished the game on W8 (all achievements won there pop automatically here), Secrets and Treasures easily claims the top spot with almost 50 completions, leaving the rest of the table, which is made up of the usual suspects, behind.

Top Windows Phone Games Completed

For the third week running, the top three are exactly the same, with Secrets and Treasure: The Lost Cities (Win 8) sitting behind the two Microsoft freebies.

Achievements Won
93,841 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 1,581,176 achievements online between them (60,104 different achievements).

Were you really in any doubt? What we have in this Destiny clean sweep is a selection of achievements for completing certain actions in the game, from inspecting other players to completing a strike.

Naturally, the 360 table follows suit. What's interesting is that, despite both games having the same exact achievement list, the order of achievements here is slightly different. Blink of an Eye and A New Steed swap positions although, like on the One, the numbers are very close. Change of Heart and Inspector also swap but, in this case, the numbers are further apart. Also, Use of Weapons makes the table on the 360 in ninth, whereas it was pushed out by both Bane of the Kell and Bane of the Dead on the One.

Top Xbox 360 Retail Achievements Won

This week sees the same achievements for XBLA as last week, with the only difference being that Dem Bones in Monaco: What's Yours is Mine slips from second to tenth, behind the whole chunk of TWD "Episode 5" achievements.

Top Xbox 360 Arcade Achievements Won

Unlike the above tables, this ones a lot more higgeldy piggeldy, as Secrets and Treasure claims first, third and ninth, whilst Tentacles grabs second, sixth, eighth and tenth. That leaves PvZ to grab one spot in fourth and Terraria to take fifth and seventh.

Top Windows Phone Achievements Won

Tentacles can only manage second and seventh this week, as Microsoft titles again control the table.

Top Windows 8 Achievements Won

With Destiny currently classed as an RPG on the site, the genre rockets up from fourth with 7 million to first with almost 20.5 million. That's nearly a triple stack increase! Both Shooter and Action-Adventure take a step back in amazement at that feat and slip from over 9 million each to around 7 million in second and third. The boost given to Simulation last week thanks to Minecraft is halved now as the genre drops from 8 million in third to 4 million in fourth. Finally, Secrets and Treasure helps put Puzzle on the table in tenth with almost 490,000.

That's all for now. Next week we'll see what Destiny's post debut tail starts to look like and if it can compete with the likes of Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes - 2.0 Edition, Flockers and D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die. I think it can.
