TA Top Five: Comedic Moments

By Marc Hollinshead, 4 years ago
We see plenty of dramatic sequences, emotional moments and a vast array of other scenes in games that keep us glued to the screen for hours on end. Every now and then, though, we witness something that manages to potentially bring us to tears through sheer laughter. Laughter is a great feeling and everyone loves it. That's why this week we have decided to go down the comedy route with the latest Top Five. A character may say a hilarious line, a really out-of-place, yet amusing mission may appear, or something that is just downright weird in the game happens to give us that side-splitting feeling. Obviously, everyone has a different sense of humour and so some of us may find some things funny that others simply find ludicrously stupid. If a few entries on this list bring nothing more than an eye-rolling sigh to you, then feel free to sound off in the comments with your best comedic game moment!

Honorable Mentions

Aaaavaaant Gaaarrrde! - D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die

This will be quite an obscure one to many, hence why it's only made the list as an honorable mention. This Xbox One exclusive title is most definitely weird. The story is weird, the gameplay is...different and the characters are very odd, especially Duncan. Duncan is a fashion designer with his fellow "companion", Sukey and his over-the-top and flamboyant nature is obvious from the start. Every time he is inspired or simply boasts about his (strange) fashion sense, he feels the need to say it is "AAAAVAAANT GAAARRRDE!" Since playing, anything from a giggle to a loud roar of laughter has happened every time I hear this. If we're going with the theme of something weird in terms of comedy, this one certainly makes the cut.

Asura at the Hot Springs - Asura's Wrath
Hot Springs

If you've played Asura's Wrath, then you'll know how much rage that Asura possesses. He is one angry demi-god. So when you are presented with this sequence half-way through the game, it looks rather out of place with the rest of the game and so is very amusing. Asura's old mentor, Augus, gives him a time to relax in a hot spring before trying to slice his head off, as you do. Asura is surrounded by girls wearing very little and he is able to drink as much alcohol as he likes. The player controls Asura in first-person and is able to take a sip of drink and even stare at...part of the girl's body who is attending to him. If he tries to give in to that lust, Augus smacks him in the face and literally causes his head to lie motionless in the water. It's a hilariously odd scene and very memorable to those who have experienced it.

Top Five

5. Wheatley Being Wheatley - Portal 2

Throughout your journey in Portal 2, Wheatley is usually there in some capacity. He does what he can to help as you go through the puzzles and eventually attempt to escape the Aperture Science facility. His dimwitted nature causes him to become a comical character even if he is only a mechanical ball full of wires and gears. Steven Merchant managed to capture Wheatley's character perfectly and so simply hearing him speak is an indication that you'll be hearing something funny in a few seconds. Even when

he still somehow manages to be liked through how stupid he is. Whether that's through failing to get a cube onto a button or just being there, Wheatley is a memorable character who has provided a giggle or two to many gamers.

4. Becoming a Toilet - Saints Row: The Third

The Saints Row series is known by now for its outrageous weapons, missions and everything in between. In the third game, the player partakes in a unique mission that involves being scanned into a virtual world and taking out a virus. This Tron-like world is full of enemies wanting to kill you, strange environments and...toilets? As soon as the mission starts, you are in the form of a toilet for an unknown reason. Eventually, you will turn into what is blatantly a blow-up doll used for not-so child friendly activities. The entire mission parodies hacking and virtual reality in a way that fits right in with the style of the game. You can't deny that it's silly, but it's hard not to find a humorous side to causing havoc as a cannon-wielding toilet. Only Saints Row can have missions this wacky.

3. Tali Getting Drunk - Mass Effect 3 Citadel DLC

Throughout Mass Effect 3, the threat of the Reapers is constantly looming over Shepard and the crew. With the Citadel DLC, the gang are finally given the chance to let their hair down and have a good time with one another. In the party towards the end of the DLC, Tali lets the fun get to her just a little too much. As the party progresses, you will eventually come across the quarian on the floor of the toilet in Shepard's apartment. She enlightens Shepard on a story of her new tattoo that Jack obviously approved of and the two have a small conversation about it. "Where did you get the tattoo, Tali?" "In the Wards." "No, I meant where on your body." "So did I. *giggle*" It's small things like this that help fans to remember why they love the characters in the first place. Many scenes of the DLC are humorous but this one highlights it as a whole.

2. Fighting Gnomes While Your Parents Have Sex - South Park: The Stick of Truth
Gnome fight

South Park has extremely crude humour. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but nonetheless it has become very successful. The latest game based on the show managed to win over many people due to its humour and how faithful it is to the source material. One stage sees your character being shrunk down and fighting those who did it to you. You will soon traverse through the vents of your house and into your parents room where you will find them doing none other than the nasty. If that wasn't enough, you have to fight the Underpants Gnomes as your parents go at it in the background and then right next to you once you travel onto the bed. This means that giant body parts (as shown in the beautiful picture above) will act as obstacles you have to avoid throughout the fight. The whole quest is so crude that it causes even the most serious of people to spurt out a giggle. Everything from your parents cries of pleasure to dodging your dad's testicles makes for a memorable and entertaining fight.

1. Shoot This Guy in the Face - Borderlands 2
Face McShooty

WANT 'EM!! NEED 'EM!! GIMMEGIMMEGIMME!! SHOOT ME IN THE FAAAAACE!!! This easy yet utterly random mission in your adventure through the Borderlands sees you coming across an insane character who has one desire; to be shot in the face. Until you grant him his wish, he will jump around erratically, shouting and screaming about how much he wants that bullet until you do the deed. I have no shame in saying I laughed my socks off when watching this and it was just the icing on the cake that you got an achievement for doing it. If you shoot Face McShooty in anything but the face, he will make sure to let you know because he wants those bullets badly. Upon shutting him up, the player will receive a surprising "THANK YOU!" from Mr. Shooty Face as he lies stone cold dead on the floor. Who knows why he wanted to be shot in the face, but one thing is certain; it was funny to do.

Are you still yet to laugh, or even crack a smile after reading any of those? You've seen our picks, so if your favourite comedic moment wasn't mentioned, be sure to let us know in the comments. After a busy week, we're all in need of a solid session of laughter so turn that frown upside down!

The TA Team will be bringing you The TA Top Five every Sunday until we run out of coolness to debate and discuss. If you have an idea for a Top Five you'd like us to do, be sure to let us know in the comments!
