A venomous snake bites you in the ankle as you inject yourself in the heart with an adrenaline shot. A tiger leaps at you from the tall grass as an elephant hurls a car at an insurgent's face just mere feet away. These are situations we tend to avoid in our day to day lives, but soon we will have the opportunity to partake in such things from the comforts of our own homes with the imminent release of Far Cry 4
. It's a dangerous world out there, full of murderous thugs and even more murderous animals; and if one were to venture into the Himalayas to experience such thrills, well...they're going to need achievements to encourage them. Thankfully there is Gamerscore to be had in the mountains of Kyrat, let's take a closer look.
On your adventure you will stumble across fifty achievements racking up the usual 1000 Gamerscore, six of which are rather "secretive" in nature. Most of your path to completion will include taking in all that the wilderness has to offer in the form of side quests and collectibles, an experience one has come to expect from previous Far Cry
titles and indeed most open-world games. It is important to note while these achievements will have you tackling all there is to do in the game, only three of them appear to be under the "do everything" requirement, which is a blessing to those trying to get Gamerscore quickly and a curse to those looking for a huge TA ratio.
Possibly the biggest of the challenges requiring you to do all of something is that of "liberating" every outpost in the game. To those new to the series, outposts act as bases of operations for the enemy in a certain area, or in other words, a place that needs to be eradicated by any means necessary. Liberating said outposts offers up as much creativity as the player can muster, whether it be stealth through the back door or a speeding car covered in C4 through the front, they are usually a source of much entertainment and an achievement many will find worth the work required to unlock it.
Those outposts again? Most players can sit back an lob grenades, mortars and elephants at the enemy's gates without much mind for consequences. It takes another, albeit craftier sort, to go in quietly and raise the flag without so much as a sound. Much trickier and all the more rewarding, this is one we can all expect to shoot for along the way, making it somewhat of a "gimme" but still an absolute pleasure to achieve.
You'll notice a common theme in Far Cry
is creativity in combat, and while blowing up convoys appears to be just one of many types of available side quests in Kyrat, it offers a ton of options. Do you wait in the grass, detonator in hand, for that first truck to drive over your explosives? Do you prepare an elephant for ramming speed and go on an all out offensive? Or do you test the armor piercing capability of enraged tigers? In any case, this has plenty of opportunity for a wide variety of encounters and is definitely worth going for. If you're playing on Xbox One and you send that cargo truck full of baddies over a cliff with a well placed grenade remember these three very important words: "Xbox, record that".
To the dismay of some, Far Cry 4
does have multiplayer and cooperative achievements. Fear not, though, because there are only three of them and at least one looks entertaining. In the game you will be able to leap from your vehicle to an enemy's and forcibly take over the driver's seat, Indiana Jones
style. This achievement requires you to do it in co-op however, so you'll need a slight bit of coordination as your fellow teammate drives while you throw caution to the wind and hurl yourself into oncoming traffic. While not all of us like non-single player focused achievement,s at least this one looks fun and also appears to be relatively painless, so to speak.
The last achievement ends us on a high note, a high altitude note that is. In Far Cry 4
, you'll be able to pilot a small gyrocopter called a "buzzer", giving you the opportunity to fire away at enemies from the skies. What could be better than firing a grenade launcher from the pilot's chair? Throwing yourself out the side, knife at the ready, to land on a very surprised enemy below. This is perhaps the most interesting in a list of achievements dominated by doing a little of each side quest or finding a few collectibles here and there. Throw yourself out of a perfectly good gyrocopter and land on somebody blade first, seriously what's not to like?
After giving the full list
a good once over, you'll notice that there is likely a lot to do in Kyrat and for your full completion you'll need to get a taste for all of it. It's a list that appears simple enough and maybe even a bit on the boring side save for a few clever achievements along the way. But in Far Cry
, it's not the requirement of the achievement that counts but how you get there that offers the entertainment and gratitude we all seek. So when you find yourself flanked on all sides by violent militants or overly aggressive honey badgers, do not go gentle into that good night. Grab that RPG, mount that elephant, call in some friends and go get your Gamerscore.
