Tuck in the younglings, grab your lightsaber, and forget the recent trilogy exists. It's nearly time for a Star Wars Battlefront
beta. Demos are so last generation. It's all about beta periods for online games now. Developers get free feedback and perform technical testing, gamers get early access to a game they are excited for. Everybody wins.
beta will launch in "early October", said DICE, and will feature at the forefront the Walker Assault on Hoth, a massive 40 player battle pitting the rebels against the empire. Like the classic games in the series, this game mode will also allow you to play as two of the most iconic figures in the entire Star Wars
universe: Luke Skywalker and (spoiler: his father) Darth Vader. Also available will be the two player horde-like Survival missions on Tatooine.
DICE is only teasing it for now, but they've also promised a third mode will be available in the beta called Drop Zone. Even more, they've announced a "companion experience" that will run alongside the beta before becoming a piece of the overall Battlefront
experience on November 17th. The app will work much like DICE's other shooter companion, Battlelog, allowing players to check stats and progression, customize loadouts and appearances, and stay connected with who among your friends are playing. On top of that, the app, which will come to the Apple App Store and Google Play store, lets players take part in Base Command
, a digital card game that allows you to earn in-game Credits that unlock Star Cards, weapons, and more in Battlefront
With this being one of the biggest games of the year, there will surely be an almost immeasurable number of players looking to join the beta. DICE hasn't announced how you can do that yet, but promises much more information in the weeks ahead. In the more traditional vein of promotion also comes new details on the Battle of Jakku, which will release as free DLC on December 8th but also serves as a pre-order bonus for those who want to access it early on December 1st. In the soon to be record-breaking The Force Awakens
, we'll see the aftermath of this battle. In Battlefront
we'll live it out.
Chronologically, the battle takes place after the Battle of Endor in a warscape meant to completely surround you, including above your head. Debris will rain from the sky and a massive Star Destroyer has crash landed in the middle of the map. DICE concept artist Anton Grandert says the map is meant to instill a David and Goliath theme, with "epic, huge super structures of the Star Destroyers contrast[ing] against the tiny but brave Rebel soldiers fighting the Imperial forces.”
Look for Battlefront
to hit stores on November 17th.
