Earlier this year, Ubisoft teased that they had left one AAA release off of their summer expo schedules. Today we finally got to see what that new game will be. Far Cry
is back, taking us back all the way to the Stone Age, with Far Cry Primal
. Details are sparse right now, though many suspect this non-numbered sequel will be more akin to the past spinoff Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
than a fully priced new game. Ubisoft teased the reveal for over a day on a livestream even after the game was prematurely leaked in an IGN Turkey tweet that was later deleted.
In this reveal trailer, we see glimpses of series staples like dangerous wildlife and the bow and arrow. Surprisingly, the entire trailer is in an ancient language without subtitles. There's no word yet if it'll feature subtitles or if we are to infer the story from body language alone, but either way that's a bold move for a AAA studio. In Primal
, players take the role of Takkar, the last survivor in your group of hunters in the land of Oros. The objective? Survive in a world where humans are at the bottom of the food chain. Mastering fire, scavenging for food, and fending off mammoths and sabretooths are just some of the problems you'll face in this new land as you strive to become the first human to overcome the odds and achieve status as the Apex Predator.
Also released is this developer diary talking about how the idea for a game set so far back in human history was greenlit.
The most exciting part might be its release date. It'll hit (digital?) stores pretty soon, on February 23rd, 2016. Thanks to the many community members who sent in this story.
