In the several months since we last heard about Vampyr, Dontnod Entertainment has finished up their coming-of-age sci-fi drama Life Is Strange where it was met with positive reviews. That makes the young studio 2-for-2 in creating games that receive a favorable response. Looking to build on their successes so far, they've taken time today to share some more details about their newest IP. We last heard about Vampyr back in June. The details we were given were a bit sparse but enough to pique the interest of several readers, including myself. Here are many more details about the atmospheric RPG, straight from the studio.
Set in London during the early 20th century, you'll play as Jonathan Reid, a doctor returning from World War I who becomes stricken with vampirism. Knowing a great deal about blood transfusions and the related scientific advancements, Reid treats his condition as exactly that. Something treatable, maybe even curable. He's a skeptic, after all, although his thirst for blood will soon become undeniable.
The gothic backdrop of a disease-filled London seemed like a great companion to the story that the studio is trying to tell, says Game Director Philippe Moreau.
England was recovering from the aftermath of the World War I, and the Spanish Flu was making its way through London’s winding alleys. The streets were rife with death and crime, but England was also going through many social and political changes, as new sciences sought to re-envision the way we see the world. Superstition was becoming less socially relevant, but it was still in the streets, folklore, and politics of London, so science was on the rise, but the world was still a dark, scary place. Especially the smoggy, smokey, war-torn streets of London.
As stated in our original preview as well as the text above, Vampyr is an RPG. Moreau boasts that the game will feature "tight visceral combat mechanics" with an emphasis on exploration and investigation. Gathering clues, talking to the other Londoners, and learning about your "condition" will be vital to the game. Your supernatural abilities are perks that come with being a bloodsucker but, naturally, you aren't the only one who can wield such powers. Human foes as well as other monsters will both stand in your way. Moreau hints that there is one key aspect of the combat mechanics that they aren't yet ready to reveal.
Regularly consuming the blood of your victims will also be vital and RPG fans will be, rather alarmingly, happy to hear you can choose who those victims are. "Everyone you meet in Vampyr could be a target, if you want," says Moreau. "But each kill will have consequences on the fragile streets of London." You can alter the story in ways good, bad, and overall unforseen by offing certain characters, and you'll see these changes take effect immediately as well as in the long-run. Killing innocent people is unfortunately the price of immortality. Besides, in the eyes of a vampire, how do you define innocent? You’ll have to kill people, that’s for sure… but how do you decide who? The information you gather, the things that you see, and the relationships your nurture will all define your decisions. But you will have to feed. You cannot escape that you are a vampire.
The title is still far off. Nothing that we've learned today seems to dispute their original intended release window of 2017, so we'll surely hear more about Vampyr for a long while. In fact, the studio is preparing their first in-game assets for release soon.
