TA Stats - 2015

By Chewie, 11 months ago
This report is for the period January 1st to December 31st 2015.

Howdy and welcome to the stats from the whole of 2015 here on TA. As well as some long awaited big name sequels and new titles, we also got an increasing volume of indie titles via the ID@Xbox programme. This year also saw the 360 kept afloat through schemes such as Games with Gold and Backwards Compatibility. The Windows and Windows Phone platform also had some new life breathed into them thanks to a range of new titles and a new operating system that promises new Live-enabled titles. That's all very well and good, but what impact did all of those things have on the numbers? Find out below!

The Big Numbers
282,665 TrueAchievements gamers started a total of 6,025,085 games between them (3,133 different games).

114,692 TrueAchievements gamers completed a total of 606,046 games between them (2,857 different games).

286,961 TrueAchievements gamers won a total of 98,629,643 achievements online between them (100,702 different achievements).

Xbox One
As you would expect, the top of the One Started table is taken up by the biggest name releases of the year. Game of the Year winner Fallout 4 leads with over 96,000 starters, with Halo 5: Guardians following quite closely behind with over 94,000. Other big name releases https://www.trueachievements.com/Call-of-Duty-Black-Ops....htm and Star Wars Battlefront settle for fifth and sixth with 71,000 and 65,000 starters each.

Slipping between those four behemoths are two freebies, one a Games with Gold offering and one a movie-game tie-in mash-up. Rayman Legends grabs third with 81,000 while Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious takes 80,000 in fourth.

All of the Achievements Won spots are filled up with the top four titles, with Fallout grabbing seven places including the top four and Halo taking eight spots further down. The massive number of starters and a very easy completion also puts Forza Horizon 2 F&F at the top of Completed with a massive lead at over 45,000 completions, over twice as many as its nearest competitor, the other easy freebie Pneuma: Breath of Life.

As well as Rayman, Games with Gold account for much of the rest of the Started table with Pool Nation FX, How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition, Pneuma, Child of Light, So Many Me, The Walking Dead and Tomb Raider - Definitive Edition all making appearances. Pneuma, The Walking Dead and Child of Light also join #IDARB and Valiant Hearts: The Great War as the Games with Gold offerings to make the Completed table. Some Games with Gold titles of 2015 that don't appear include MASSIVE CHALICE, The Deer God and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

Of course, free games don't just come as part of Games with Gold. Free-to-play RPG Neverwinter is the ninth most started title with 61,000 starters while Goat Simulator appears as the thirteenth most completed title thanks in part to a day of free availability.

The year's other new releases to make the bottom half of the Started table include Dying Light, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Battlefield Hardline, Batman: Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited with between 52,000 and 58,000 starters. Some big name releases that, perhaps surprisingly, don't make appearances include Evolve, Rare Replay (though it makes an impact further down), Mad Max, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Forza Motorsport 6, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Many big budget titles also don't make Completed thanks to their lower completion percentages, especially in comparison to the large amount of easier to complete indie titles like Thomas Was Alone and Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna), and Telltale titles like Tales from the Borderlands and The Walking Dead: Season Two, which fill up the list. Fallout does manage to be the eighteenth most completed with almost 3,900 completions, whilst Destiny shows up at the bottom with 3,200 from the "Taken King" DLC.

Xbox 360
Two years since the One's release, new releases don't factor into the 360 tables, as you might expect, with Games with Gold, Rare Replay and Backwards Compatibility dominating instead.

In fact, only one game that was released in 2015 appears at all: the free Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious (Xbox 360), which leads on all three tables with over 27,000 starters, 16,000 completions and sixteen big places on Achievements Won, including the top eight. Look down the rest of the Started list and it'll actually be easier to name the titles which aren't Games with Gold freebies than the ones which are. Kameo: Elements of Power appears in fifteenth thanks to its involvement with Rare Replay. Fallout 3 takes seventeenth thanks to a mix of Backwards Compatibility and being offered as a free code with copies of the sequel. South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) grabs nineteenth as the most popular Backwards Compatible title that isn't otherwise offered as part of another package.

The Completed table gives us a bit more variety, with a mix of freebies, earlier big name releases like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360), and the likes of Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth, which appears probably thanks to site scoring competitions such as GTASC and Leap Frog.

XBLA
Games with Gold naturally has an impact on XBLA too, although fewer freebies were offered here. On Started, freebies Terraria (Xbox 360) and Plants vs. Zombies lead with Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons (Xbox 360), BattleBlock Theater, The Walking Dead (Xbox 360), CastleStorm, Toy Soldiers: Cold War and Motocross Madness also appearing. The free day of Goat Simulator (Xbox 360) and free first episodes of Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series (Xbox 360), The Walking Dead: Season Two (Xbox 360) and Tales from the Borderlands (Xbox 360) also help to put those games on the tables, both Started and Completed, as they are all easy completions.

Rare Replay has a bigger impact on XBLA with Banjo-Kazooie as the third most Started title and Jetpac Refuelled, Perfect Dark and Banjo-Tooie all taking places. Both Banjo games also appear on Completed with their easy completions.

A rare new release for 2015, Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight (Xbox 360), takes thirteenth on Started with its free-to-playness. Spartacus Legends appears for the last time in eighteenth on Completed as almost 700 people rushed to finish it before the server closure at the end of the year.

Windows
Although Windows 10 was launched this year, there are a lot fewer W10 titles than I would like to see so far. Here's hoping that next year sees more being released. Naturally, Microsoft Solitaire Collection (UWP) leads by some margin with over 21,000 starters, whilst Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta and Age of Empires: Castle Siege (Win 10) take fourth and fourteenth. Non-W10 specific new releases for the year include Asphalt 8: Airborne (Win 8), Despicable Me: Minion Rush (Win 8), Microsoft Jackpot (Win 8) and Dragon Mania Legends (Win 8). This was also the year that Game Troopers took control of releasing regular Live-enabled content with Make It Rain: The Love of Money (Win 8) and Tiny Troopers (Win 8) sitting side by side in twelfth and thirteenth.

Without the extra achievements that were added into some of the other Microsoft titles, Microsoft Mahjong (Win 8) easily leads on Completed, while Make It Rain is the most completed non-Microsoft title in second. The top four titles fill up Achievements Won, with Solitaire easily dominating with twelve places including the top seven.

Windows Phone
Game Troopers' influence is felt strongly on the Windows Phone with eight new releases making the tables for 2015. Make It Rain: The Love of Money (WP) leads in first, followed by What in the World? (WP) and Twins (WP). Monster Go! (WP) and Tiny Troopers (WP) take seventh and eighth while swift sequel Tiny Troopers 2: Special Ops (WP) and Lines The Game (WP) grab thirteenth and fourteenth. Finally, Runemals (WP) grabs eighteenth. They weren't the only publishers to put things on the system this year, though, as free-to-play newcomers Lara Croft: Relic Run (WP), Doodle God Blitz (WP) and Dragon Mania Legends (WP) all take places.

Two of the Game Troopers titles, Make It Rain and What in the World?, lead considerably on Completed and dominate most of Achievements Won. 2013 release UNO & Friends (WP) also takes a high spot on Completed in third thanks to a long-awaited achievement-fixing patch.

Genres
The top four genres remain unchanged between 2014 and 2015 as Action-Adventure still leads over Shooter, followed by Role-Playing and Action. Role-Playing manages to extend its gap over Action thanks to big releases such as Fallout and Neverwinter. Racing climbs up from seventh to fifth this year despite the absence of any big name Racing titles on the table. Adventure also jumps from eighth to sixth thanks to the increasing abundance of (mostly Telltale) point-and-click games on the lists. That leaves Sports and Platformer to slip down the table, although both actually increase their numbers, but just not as much as the other genres.
