When the original Psychonauts
was released to consoles in 2005, it immediately garnered critical acclaim from reviewers and gamers alike. Unfortunately, commercial success didn't come along with the game and led to some structural changes with the game's publisher, Majesco. In the aftermath, Double Fine, makers of Costume Quest
and Brutal Legend
and developers of Psychonauts
, acquired the rights to the title and released it more broadly. Since then, Psychonauts
has been well-played and well-received, and calls for a sequel to the title grew through the ten years since its release. Now, thanks to a successful crowd-funding campaign
, Psychonauts 2
will finally go into development.
In case you were unaware of the premise of Psychonauts
, here's a brief summery. A young man named Razputin, whose dream it is to become a psychic agent, or Psychonaut, runs away from the circus and breaks into the training facility of the Psychonauts,. While at the training facility, the Rock Psychic Summer Camp, Raz drops into the consciousness of those around him, with the level design being dependent on the person whose head he was visiting. When all is said and done, the game ends on a cliffhanger, promising to deliver further adventures of Raz, the other Summer Campers, and the agents who trained them.
In Psychonauts 2
, Raz will visit Psychonaut headquarters and, unsurprisingly, things will be amiss. In just what way things will go wrong, however, will not be known to us until more details are released between now and the game's release on Xbox One sometime in Fall 2018.
