Developer Volition and publisher Deep Silver announced a new original title today set in the Saints Row
universe. The game follows the story of the Agents of M.A.Y.H.E.M. (the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds), a team of heroes recruited from around the world who oppose L.E.G.I.O.N. (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations). The game's name is Agents of Mayhem
Volition promises the over-the-top gameplay the Saints Row
franchise is known for will return in Agents of Mayhem
. The connections don't end at style - elements and symbolism from the Saints Row
universe will be present.
The story features Volition's signature outrageous setting, so it's probably best to let them set the stage:
In a simultaneous global assault, LEGION has taken control over the nations of the world and the only force left to stop them is MAYHEM. Led by the mysterious and no-nonsense Persephone Brimstone, MAYHEM’s elite Super Agents are called to the city of Seoul, South Korea. Led by LEGION Minister Doctor Babylon and his diabolical lieutenants, a nefarious plot is set in motion to build a world-altering device that will grant unrivaled power to the supervillain organization. In order to stop LEGION and take back the world, the Agents of Mayhem will traverse a sprawling urban battlefield from the ground to the rooftops and team up as a super-agent collective to stop LEGION at any cost.
Success is far from guaranteed and collateral damage will be substantial, but it’s all in a day’s work for the Agents…
At its core, the game is a third person shooter. Instead of a single player-created gangster, players will control one of three Agents at any one time with the ability to swap between them freely (think GTA 5). Each Agent has unique gameplay features including special abilities and traversal options. Some are close-range bruisers, others specialize in long range attacks. You'll be able to customize those Agents with various gadgets to suit your playstyle. A total of 12 Agents have currently been named, though the screenshots and trailer only show three of them.
Speaking of the trailer, it's a four-minute showcase of the game that gives us an introduction to the game's style and theme courtesy of IGN:
We will hear more about the game at E3, so be sure to tune in next week to learn more about the game. Agents of Mayhem
will release in 2017.
