Destiny: Rise of Iron Revealed

By Kevin Tavore, 6 months ago
Bungie long ago announced that Destiny would have a 10-year plan, so we always knew something was coming this year. At first it seemed that would be Destiny 2, but a bit of development turbulence seems to have set that back and instead we are getting a second major expansion pack to Destiny - "Rise of Iron" is coming in September.

Let's get a few details out of the way first. This isn't Destiny 2, it's an expansion to the first game. That means you must own all of the previous DLC, including "The Taken King," in order to play the new content. It's also exclusive to next gen consoles - you will not be able to play this on Destiny (Xbox 360).

Activision's Eric Hirshberg claims the amount of content in "Rise of Iron" will be extensive:

We have been working hard with our partners at Bungie and are planning great, new content for Destiny’s 30 million registered players. Rise of Iron is the first step in fulfilling that promise...There’s a ton of content packed in Rise of Iron, including a new location, a new Raid and a new Strike, combined with more quests, weapons, gear, a competitive multiplayer mode and more that we think players are going to love.

The new location is the Plaguelands according to the reveal trailer and it's located along the southern border of the Cosmodrome. It's a dark land where we'll meet a hero from the Golden Age named Lord Saladin. He's probably the guy with the giant flaming great axe in the trailer. Lord Saladin is actually the last Iron Lord, who fought against the Darkness from their fortress at the top of Felwinter Peak. Speaking of that, the raid is Felwinter Peak, which the trailer depicts as a snowy, outdoor excursion.

There's also a new social area which overlooks the Plaguelands. The enemies are changing too - a new mutated enemy faction of the Fallen have risen up to challenge players. They are the Fallen Devil Splicers, who took technology from the Golden Age and used it to become a large threat - their strongest champions are holed up in Felwinter Peak.

Players who pre-order will gain access to a new version of a beloved weapon - the Iron Gjallarhorn.

Destiny's "Rise of Iron" expansion will release on September 20, 2016 on Xbox One. It will be $30, though PSN users can currently preorder for $25 so perhaps Xbox users will be able to also. There's also no news on any complete editions that include all content.
