You know a game has been sitting half-finished in your backlog a long time when it is announced at E3 that that very game is being reimagined from the ground up. The game in this situation is 2006's Prey (Xbox 360), which was developed by Human Head Studios and ported to Xbox 360 by the now-defunct Venom Games. Arkane Studios, known for Dishonored and the upcoming Dishonored 2, will be at the helm of this reimagining.
This is no remaster or remake in the terms we're used to. This isn't the Dishonored Definitive Edition. In Bethesda's words, Arkane Studios is "bringing their unique vision to Prey, a first-person sci-fi action game that reimagines the franchise from the ground up… with an added psychological twist."
In the trailer below, those who have played the original Prey will immediately see how the upcoming Prey differs from its predecessor, which focuses on a young man with Cherokee Native American roots after he finds himself unexpectedly aboard an alien spaceship.
Bethesda describes the storyline of the new Prey as the following:
You are Morgan Yu, the subject of morally dubious experiments designed to improve the human race. You awaken aboard the Talos 1 in the year 2032 and must uncover the secrets hiding in the depths of the space station while being hunted by the mysterious alien force that has taken over. You’ll have to rely on the tools you find on the station – along with your wits, weapons and mind-bending abilities – to combat the growing threat and, hopefully, survive. The answers to these secrets and mysteries will be revealed when Prey launches in 2017.
