ARK: Survival Evolved Gets Three Titanic Updates

By Sam Quirke, 1 year ago
It looks like Studio Wildcard have been hard at work on ARK: Survival Evolved in the run-up to E3. In the time since the last update, they've been working towards today's announcement of three big updates to come to the game shortly.

First up, we have the Titanosaurus, which is just as gigantic as it sounds, "essentially a walking mountain". It can carry "obscene" amounts of weight, including structures, defenses and other creatures. It will also naturally clear you a nice big path through any obstacles. Titanosaurus comes with the "Redwood Biome" update.

As the name suggests, this will be a lush, dense forest region. You'll be able to build fortresses and villages on the trees themselves. Both are showcased below, and the update is available "shortly after" it arrives on Steam on June 22nd.

Next we have the community-created mod "Primitive+", launching officially on July 28th for both PC and Xbox versions of the game.

The mod will challenge players to play the game using primarily wood and stone, and without access to advanced metals. To offset that, the mod comes with lots of new items and mechanics. Primitive+ will be playable on all official ARK maps, and includes:

  • Over 100 primitive-themed structures
  • 3 ancient building tiers (adobe, lumber, brick & cement)
  • Diverse resource system - live off the land with 40 different resources
  • Primitive trapping system (deadfall trap / fishing traps)
  • Advanced farming - 10 historic crops and resources (Wheat, Barley, Coffee, Tea, etc)
  • 11 iconic weapons (Flintlock pistol, Musket, Viking Axe, Battleaxe, etc)
  • 60 types of food recipes to craft
  • Enhanced role-playing experience (market stalls for trading, meals, etc)

The final big news, as revealed by Co-Creative Director Jesse Rapczak during the PC Gaming Show, was an upcoming "Total Conversion": ARK: Primal Survival, where you get to "play, live and breed as any of the ARK's creatures". You'll be able to experience the entire creature life cycle, recruit new creatures to your pack and in some cases create primitive structures.

The screenshot examples given show what it's like to play as the Raptor, the Araneo, wolves, bears and the Titanomyrma. The new mode should be available on Xbox and PC later this year, and comes with functionality to allow modders to take advantage of the new play style.

With all of these content updates, you sometimes forget this game still isn't out of Game Preview yet. The official release date is still simply '2016'.
