Kingdom Come: Deliverance Details and Delay

Survival in a realistic medieval setting is tough, as shown in this video for first person RPG game Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Warhorse Studios shows off their RPG and armour systems as well as getting real about 15th century fancy dress.

At first glance the Kingdom Come: Deliverance RPG system looks like a fairly standard combination of stats and skills. Stats such as speech and strength will increase as the player levels up, while skills such as fencing and horse riding increase through use or by visiting trainers. Not only do players need to eat and sleep to survive, but failing to do so will have a direct impact on gameplay. Fatigue makes it harder to negotiate deals and combat is more difficult if you are injured. You can temporarily increase your toughness by getting drunk, but will suffer the penalty of a hangover the next day. You can gather food to take on your adventures, but you can't store it indefinitely in your inventory because it will rot.

The armour system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance has 16 slots and four layers, allowing for thousands of possible combinations. A fully equipped warrior will layer a soft undershirt, chain mail, plate armour and tabard, each of which has different protective properties. This was a massive undertaking for the character actors and engineers. Every piece had to be individually modelled and then tested with one another to check they work together and ensure the layers don't interfere with one another. Not only is it important to repair armour and weapons to be effective in combat, but turning up to a town covered in dirt will make people more reluctant to even talk to you let alone give you a good deal.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is currently in beta on PC, but unfortunately the console release has been pushed back to 2017.
