The E3 announcement
of a new version of Prey
raised many questions about how it related to the original Prey (Xbox 360)
. Raphael Colantonio of Arkane Studios gives us some answers in this new video.
First and foremost Colantonio makes clear that “Prey
is not a sequel, it’s not a remake, it has no tie with the original”, although there are similarities between the two. The new game takes place on a space station where you pit your wits against aliens and can learn to use their own powers against them as well as scavenging human technology from the labs around you. New hero Morgan has been given a gender neutral name because you will be able to choose whether to play as a man or a woman, in contrast to the original where your identity was strictly defined by the game.

While the original Prey
had some unique and interesting mechanics, player choices didn't go much beyond picking what weapon to use. Colantonio's description suggests a game structure much closer to Mass Effect
, in which narrative and action are interspersed and choices lead to consequences that make for a unique player experience. Prey
will be released on Xbox One in 2017.
