As a Halo
fan, you know it well. You get online to see if your friends want to play some Warzone in Halo 5: Guardians
. You've been looking forward to it all day and really want to knock out a few matches and use the sweet new REQ card you got at the end of last night. "Sorry," he says, "I've got to do the raid for the third time this week and then I'm going to spend all night on Trials of Osiris in Destiny
." You're confounded. How could anyone feel this way? It's as if all joy has been sucked out of the world. It's just not right.
Sure, they're heroes. But would Master Chief be a better hero?
But to some, it is. Destiny
is a phenomenon. Taking quality gameplay and matching it with addictive RPG elements that demand replay is a great way to make a good concept an everlasting force in the industry year after year. Players love getting on, running the raid with their friends and finally getting that rush when you get a weapon you've been hoping for for weeks. It's an amazing feeling and it's just one of the many parts that add up to make Destiny
something truly great for some.
These two franchises were always destined to meet on the battlefield. The newer Halo
games are all 343i's creation, but they certainly look back at what made Halo
great while injecting new ideas. Destiny
is Bungie's evolution of what should have followed Halo
. As humans, we are naturally inclined to pick the best of something. And now we've got a hard choice. We need to pick the best successor to one of our first childhood loves: Halo 1-3
. But, while the two choices share a history and common inspiration, they are so unfathomably different. How can we?
