Xbox Turns 15 Today - Share Your Favorite Moments and Games

By Mark Delaney,
Where were you fifteen years ago? Think back. It seems like a different world. Virtual reality was still thought of as science fiction, all cars needed to be driven by humans, and the United States still hadn't elected its first orange President. One constant, as of today, is the Xbox console. It turns fifteen years old today, that's a decade and a half of Forza, Halo, Gears, apps, achievements, Kinect, Cortana, and so much more. In human terms, the Xbox is still an adolescent going through major changes, figuring out the world and how it'll view it before it reaches adulthood (Project Scorpio?).

With such a momentous anniversary today, we want to open up the discussion to our community. What are some of your fondest Xbox memories? For many it's maybe LAN parties on Halo: Combat Evolved or the first time you saw a Berserker in Gears of War. Personally, the Xbox 360 was the first console I went out and bought on my own time with my own money. It signaled the onset of my own adulthood. No longer did I have to put games on a Christmas wishlist. In 2008 I could go and buy what I wanted with my own money. For many others the story starts earlier than that, with the original Xbox.

Fifteen years of space marines -- and so much more.Fifteen years of space marines -- and so much more.

Maybe it lived in the shadow of the record-setting and dominant PlayStation 2, but the original Xbox's modest success guaranteed the brand would live on. Master Chief became a mascot for a generation of gamers, much like Mario or Sonic before him. A decade and a half later, MC is still the "face of the franchise" for Phil Spencer and company. The Xbox 360 is seen as the victor of the previous generation thanks to its online infrastructure and best-selling numbers. On top of that, the Xbox One is really coming into its own as of late, now having won the NPD figures for a fourth consecutive month while excellent exclusives like Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 lead commercially and critically.

All of this history began fifteen years ago today, November 15th. Sony and Nintendo have had to make room for Xbox at the table ever since. Surely in a decade and a half, we've all amassed some fond Xbox memories, so please share them with the community in the comments below. Don't forget to take part in our poll as well. For that we rounded up a few of the highest rated games (according to Metacritic) across all three console cycles. Which of them is your favorite?

Happy anniversary, Xbox!
