UHH2 Winner Interview - MattiasAnderson

By Kevin Tavore, 6 months ago
UHH2 has come to an end. Yesterday, we heard from our two-time, perpetual runner-up named The JJudge...er...DANIELJJ14. He goes by both. But today we turn our eyes to this year's victor, who fought hard and fast every single round to come out with a well-deserved victory. Let's give him a hand. His name is MattiasAnderson.

The Interview

Gamertags almost always tell something about their owners. Tell us about yours.
Well, my gamertag reveals that I am a guy despite my avatar! Could as well answer the question instead of why I use a female avatar since I am a guy. The reason is simple! I prefer to look at women.
1

How long have you been gaming?
I don't remember what year it was but since when my father decided to buy a Nintendo when it came out. He thought that it was time for me to stay home more instead of always being outside playing soccer. What a stupid decision by him since I was extremely talented soccer player and believe I would have been on a top team somewhere. Instead I ended up here!
Fame either way!

Do others in your family game, or are you a first-generation gamer?

My wife likes to play some games but other than that it is just me!
Assuming you’re not a professional gamer, what’s your day job?
Me...not a professional gamer? Cmon I just won UHH! Seriously, I want to start my own business. I have built my own games! I have a card game ready and a board game that could be ready when I tell the artist to finish the work. However, since I am not very good at getting my products out and don't know what to do its just ready but not out there. I want to make my games digital. Perhaps an indie game but I do not have the right connections. I’ve been in touch with a lot of the wrong people so nothing ever happened. I also work on an online card game and it looks really promising. This is what I want to do for a living and if anyone reading this can help me or know some people, please contact me.
What other hobbies do you enjoy?
I am a professional poker player with a good career behind me! In 2004 I finished in 8th place at the world series of poker (WSOP) main event. Greg Raymer busted me with his A/10 vs my A/K. Oh man I will always wonder what would have happened if he would not have hit runner, runner straight...I knew beforehand I could win this tournament and had a really good shot at it but sometimes things just don’t go your way.

I am gonna start teaching poker in a near future so if you are interested you may contact me. I been teaching before and it was a blast when they told me about their winnings afterwards. I think I game too much when I have other things I actually should do.
Tell us about your home life – parents, spouse, children, significant other, animal companions?
I am a bit private but oh well, I have a very lovely wife who I met during one of all my travels. Since 2004 I have been traveling A LOT and that is something I love. (Who doesn't). During one of these travels I met my lovely wife while staying in a hotel where she worked. We are now married since two years back and it is the most beautiful thing ever.
What part of the world do you live in? If I were to visit, what sights would I have to see?
I cant really recommend anything when it comes to Sweden! Nothing to see here really! Go to Vegas or Paris or something. Can I say that? I guess I just did!
Of what real life achievement are you most proud? Would you give us some details?
Winning UHH2 on TrueAchievements!

Who am I kidding?

My biggest achievement would be marrying my wife and finishing 8th in the WSOP main event 2004 but could also brag a bit about winning the 2001 Swedish Championship in Magic The Gathering (Classic).
If you had to pick one spirit animal to describe you, what would it be?
A big bird! I love birds, beautiful animals! Love them!

Competing in UHH2

When you first began UHH2, where did you see yourself finishing? Did you believe you could make it as far as you did?
This is the kind of question that can give me some trouble! Do I answer it in a diplomatic way or should I be honest? Well, I am the kind of person who does not really do anything halfway if I can finish things. I either don't do it at all or I do it 100 %. I am very strategic and always like when there is some strategy behind a competition. UHH is/was one of those competitions. A lot of people did not like my approach and trust me I have been hearing a lot about it. But a lot of hours have been invested in going for the win and sure it was not easy.
How long did you normally spend gaming per day prior to UHH2? How did this change throughout UHH, especially in the final weeks?
I game way too much! More than I should! I will change this behavior at some point.
Did you spend much time outside of gaming preparing for the contest each week?
I wanted to always be 10 steps ahead my opponents. So I checked each opponent out that I thought would be tough. I looked what games they had. At top 64 I knew what everyone had in their game collection and actually predicted each of my opponent correctly up to top 8 where I start getting it all wrong.
Did you suffer burn out at any point during the competition and, if so, what kept you going?

Yes a bit! The toughest time was after top 8 when I felt that there is too little time but so much to do in order to be perfectly ready for the remaining opponents. But I kept going!
Did you get any games in your list you didn't enjoy and end up liking them more? What about games you used to like but no longer do thanks to the UHH achievement?
Lets see! I added South Park Stick Of Truth to my game collection before uhh started and now it is one of my all time fave games. I loved this game! I had no expectations at all!

And I truly hated Stormrise! The final week playing all levels on hard in that horrible game. That was not fun at all. But I never liked that game before.
With the competition now over, are you missing the weekly challenge and do you think that your gaming habits will change in the immediate future?
No! I am just enjoying the moment of victory! I am now taking it a bit easy but will soon be going at it again, I'm sure.
What sacrifices did you have to make and do you feel it was worth it now that the competition is over?
Some! There are other things I definitely need to do and wasn't really done during this period. But I had to take a bit of a break from other things so UHH was great.
You only have an Xbox 360. Do you think this helped or hurt you in the competition?
It for sure hurt me big time! With an Xbox One I could have done so much more and it would have been much easier for me.
What is your favorite part about UHH?
The moment when you are waiting for the new list to appear! What will I get? Who will I face? And I like the elimination process. I probably prefer that instead of a dragged out league but look forward to possibly see how that would be like. I think the 3 week group stage was awesome followed by a playoff!
If you could choose the rules for UHH3, what would they be?
This is gonna be long! I have a lot to say about this! [Ed. Note: He’s not joking. Spoiler tagging so you can read if you’re interested! Basically, he wants to give preloaders a handicap which is really an interesting idea that no one has brought up.]
*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***
Now that you've won UHH, do you see yourself attempting to win a different competition?
It depends on what type of competition it is! GTASC is too long and when you win it there is nothing to show for it after on your profile in form of a badge and that is something important I think as without it there is nothing to reflect back on. There are no trophies and nothing to gain really. A simple badge don't mean so much for most people but I always want at least something to reflect back upon. Just like achievements! We collect them and perhaps reflect back upon our completions.

Gaming in General

What’s your favorite game of all time on any console? What makes it special?
Do I have to just mention one? What if I refuse? I refuse!

I would like to say The Legend of Zelda for Nintendo! I remember when I wanted the game as a kid and didn't get it but a few days after I am walking home from school and see my mother drive by me holding up the game in her hands NOT PICKING ME UP. I'm like shit have to run home! I was sold on this game. I was like 7 years old or something and it wasn't easy to beat that game at that age without any guides. The Internet did not exist and I remember at school when me and the other kids discussed the game together and when one would be so proud for figuring out how to advance.

And if you love Zelda and have an Xbox 360. Please do yourself a favor and get Sega Mega drive ultimate collection. Unlock the easter egg in the game called Golden Axe Warrior. That game took me by surprise when I realized it was a Zelda 1 game. I Google’d it and it appears that the makers of this game got legal problems after making this game as it is obvious they just made a game that was exactly like Zelda.
Do you remember the first game you played? What’s your fondest memory of it?
It was that day my father brought me a Nintendo. The first game was Ice Climbers and it totally sucked. I did not like it that much but was overwhelmed that you could play something on the TV. I remember thinking about how the hell they did that?

My fondest gaming memory is when I finally beat The Legend of Zelda.
If some evil spell allowed you to own only a single game for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?
I would give up gaming and burn the game or something! Who can play only one game? I really don't like when games need more than one play-through. Not even when the game is great. But I would guess a sports game would be the best choice but no way I would play games if I could only play one. On a second thought, perhaps I would have to say Magic The Gathering or my future game if it ever gets finished/published.
Any games you regret putting on your gamertag?
All those unbeatable Atari games! I collected games and I really don't know why I had to try to grab everything that was put on sale. Just plain stupid! My goal is to have 99 % completion in the end and those games are unbeatable.

But here are some of the rest! They all suck so badly and they annoy me, they really do!

Asteroids & Deluxe
Box Office Smash! Scene It?
Battlezone
Centipede & Millipede
Cloudberry Kingdom
Droplitz
Green Day Rockband
Get Fit With Mel B (Seriously I have been grinding forever to reach level 100 from level 95)
Geometry Wars Evolved 2
Hole In The Wall
Michael Jackson The Experience
Missile Command
Pac-Man Museum
Scene It? Movie Night
Trials Evolution
Tony Hawks Ps Hd
Zuma

And some of the other music games I do regret.
Tell us about your gamer pic. Why did you choose that one?
Its Rosa! Rosa is a cool girl from a cool game called Deathsmiles! I love those kind of games with bullets all over the screen. Make you feels great when you manage to beat them. I managed to beat the game with Rosa without using any continue on my 2nd day playing the game. I am a bit proud of that achievement.
What upcoming game are you most looking forward to?
Honestly I don't know any of the upcoming games! I don't have an Xbox One. I was stupid enough to collect so many Xbox 360 games and I want to finish those games before I get Xbox One. Maybe 3 years from now I will have it. My plan is to really only play games that I like instead of playing any type of games like I have up to now. So I hope for a lot of JRPGs like Lost Odyssey!

But honestly! How hard can it be to make games like Zelda?
What game(s) are you currently playing? How are you finding it?
I have a thing going on were I let people vote what game I should play next! You can find it in my last blog. It has been a bit on hold because of UHH but I will get back to that now. It makes me play games I would not have picked next and it is interesting to see what games other people liked and recommend for me to play. However it seems that I don't like most of the games they recommend for me. It’s a bummer!

Example would be Spelunky which is a game I really don't like and have to get back to!

People have complained how I rate games! Many games I give half a star because honestly most games aren't any good. Some games like Final fantasy and Lost Odyssey, that's a different story.
What game are you most proud of completing? Why?
When I am done with Kinect Star Wars that would probably be it! Beating Darth Vader under those 60 or 59 seconds was a killer. My back was hurt way too many times doing that. And honestly why would a grownup go through all of this? Well I did and sometimes I don't know why I am pushing myself through these horrible grinds or tough games.

I did beat Rygar on Nintendo and many other tough games on that console that I think very few people completed. So I guess I could be a bit proud of those completions but got nothing to show for it.
What single Xbox achievement are you most proud of? Why?
Kinect Star WarsOnly a Master of EvilThe Only a Master of Evil achievement in Kinect Star Wars worth 469 pointsComplete the Vader Duel with a Jedi Master rating, alone or with a friend.

Like I said above! it is by far the toughest achievement I have accomplished. I tried so many times and when I finally did it, it was on my 2nd attempt on that day while on other days I played for many hours straight without any success.
In a slightly different vein, do you have a favorite achievement? One perhaps that you just really enjoyed attaining?
Lost OdysseyTreasure TroveThe Treasure Trove achievement in Lost Odyssey worth 80 pointsObtain all Treasure Box items in the field. The items you missed may be available at auction houses.

Yes I did enjoy it! Weird thing! But it was before I had all these games lined up in my backlog.

Another one would be:
Final Fantasy XIIISecret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in Final Fantasy XIII worth 278 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement

Reason is that I was stubborn enough that I wanted to get this achievement before I would beat the game, making it much harder. I did it but it wasn't easy and for that it felt great when I got this one.
If you found yourself dropped into a video game, which video game character would you most want to have your back?
Rosa in Deathsmiles!
In the same scenario, what character/creature would you most/least like to see headed your way?
The white small scary looking things in Silent hill that just walk towards you slowly and just don't budge when you hit them. Scary dudes!
Any characters you would like seen thrown into video game hell?
Mel B...You can do this, I know you can, let’s do this...wtf shut up.
Ever had any bad experiences online? How did you handle it?
There are always people that give you trouble. It is unfortunate. It is easy to be misunderstood. Would be nice if everyone would be friendly with each other. I can be bad sometimes, I'm sure, but I really want everyone to just get along and be nice with each other.
Do you prefer single player or multi-player?
I despise games that have multiplayer in them! The new trend that all games have it really takes away lot of the fun for me. I want to play JRPGs and games like Skyrim without other people in them. I am very social but when it comes to a games I like to explore it on my own.

The only time I like multiplayer games are games like Magic The Gathering and of course sports games unless they add boring achievements related to the multiplayer.

I have by the way hosted a lot of Magic The Gathering tournaments here on TA. They were great fun. Plan to maybe make another one in the future for Xbox One but I guess I am a little late to the party for that.
Do you have a favorite group of friends you like to play with? If so, how did you meet?
I do! It is Darkling1542 and A Banned Cribb!

Great guys! I came in contact with Darkling after the first Leapfrog. And honestly I do not remember how I came in contact with A Banned Cribb. Maybe he does?

Then I got my irl friend Srfsmurf who I used to game a lot with.
If you could have a multiplayer session with anyone in the world, whom would you choose? Why?
Derren Brown because he is the coolest person I know!
What other consoles do you own? What are your favorites on those platforms?
I have Nintendo, Super NES, Wii, Dreamcast, PlayStation and PlayStation 2 and Gameboy. I never play any of them but thought Dreamcast was really cool. Loved Shenmue!

I saw that they might finish the 3rd game after all which would be truly awesome! I think it is a kickstarter project!
Have you ever had a game you really looked forward to that you were disappointed in when it finally arrived? Tell us about it.
Final Fantasy X3 because it was not a open world the whole time. It was only good when you arrived at the chapter that was like an open world. I still enjoyed the game but it was a disappointment.

But I would also like to say Zelda Ocarina of Time and all the Zelda games after that! It will never be as good as it was on the Nintendo.
Tell us about your gaming set-up.
Its horrible right now! I have a temporary living right now as I look to move on to where my career takes me. I don't know exactly where it will be right now but I am looking to move to either Denmark, Norway or England given the chance. You can see in the picture how terrible it is. I am a very tidy person and I like things to be very clean and organized. This doesn't show the true me at all. The best setup I have seen anyone have is Smrnov. That's how I intend to make it.

How do you use TA? Tracking, walkthroughs, solutions, sessions?
I use it daily! I use way too much! I use walkthroughs and the guides. Sessions to get those annoying pesky online achievements done. I am a very active person here on TA and also published 3 walkthroughs already. Two of them that I am very happy with. Two visual novels!

Check them out!

Phantom Phantom Of Inferno and Root Double Before Crime After Days!

I would like to join the TA Community Events Team but not so sure they would like to add me.
How has your gaming changed or evolved since coming to TA?
It changed my gaming behavior BIG TIME! I started to collect games and now I want to complete most of them. Even if I continue to play games I don't like I do get satisfaction out of the completions when I am done with them as it is a rewarding feeling that lasts for like a few minutes then you move on to the next one. (Yeah, I know).
What do you like and dislike most about the site?
I like the fact that it has really good guides that helps me when I am struggling with something.
How did you learn about TA? Have you signed up any friends to the website?
I think Srfsmurf was the one finding it. He showed it to me and I signed up. Then I also brought about 6 people or so that I found for some of the competitions I been hosting myself.
Have you made friends here?
I have met so many great people on here! A lot of them! I hope to meet up with some of them sometime in real life as that would be awesome. Also hope to get to know some more people who possibly could lead me somewhere in the gaming industry as I really hope to get my games out there. Dream scenario would be to get to know some great people and together work towards something.
If you could have a game handcrafted just for you, what would your perfect game be?
My own game that I have been working on! It is an online card game that I think has the possibility to be a big hit if ever given the chance. I do play a game called Hearthstone but I play that game mostly because there are no alternative. It’s not that good of a game! Too much luck in it. Then Magic The Gathering seem to be just full of greed!

So yeah if you play Hearthstone on the European server hit me up!
Why do you choose TA over other gaming sites?
Because I honestly think the other gaming sites are so bad. They look ugly and they don't have high quality guides. Sometimes though I have to look elsewhere to find a good walkthrough or a guide for some achievements.
Do you have a “claim to fame” in gaming? If so, what is it?
Does winning UHH2 count?

Well, I hope to advance in life and make some good things out of my talent. I hope to get in touch with the right group of people who could help me along the way. I am very talented when it comes to create games and many times I wish I could do what Rich aka TrueAchievement can do or even better, be able to program my own games.

Final Thoughts

Is there anything in particular you want the TA community to know about you?
I already mentioned it but the fact that I am hoping to sometime find someone or a group of people who are into programming and can guide me through the rest with my games or even better work with me. I am a very talented game creator but since we moved on from playing board games to the digital world I need to adjust.
Is there anything I haven’t asked that you want to talk about?
Let me think! I believe I brought most of the things up that I wanted to share!
Any shout-outs you want to make before we go?

And that's it! It's been a wonderful competition. I want to give a personal thanks to both finalists for coming and giving and interview and a personal congrats to Mattias for getting the win. You were both seriously impressive. I hope to see everyone at the next TA competition. Who knows, maybe you will get an interview out of it!?

For normal site interviews, if you have a friend you'd like to nominate to be interviewed, or if you'd like to nominate yourself, please send a PM to kintaris.
