TrueAchievements Has Now Tracked 1 Billion Achievement Unlocks

By Rich Stone,
Today we passed a rather impressive milestone: we have now tracked over 1 BILLION Xbox achievement unlocks! That's a staggering 1,000,000,000 achievements that we have stored in our rather hefty database and that means that it's time for us to do some analysis on all of that lovely data (and there's a handy infographic here)...

Please note, you can click on most of the chart bars or pie slices to be taken to a list of relevant games, achievements or gamers.

1 Billion Tracked Achievements - The Analysis

Achievements Won By Year

The striking thing about this graph is the drop off in the number of achievements that were won during 2016: it is down almost 20% compared to 2015. With more games than ever released last year and more gamers than ever on TrueAchievements, what could be the cause of this? We are guessing that gamers are sinking more of their time into large multiplayer games such as Tom Clancy's The Division and Overwatch: Origins Edition and perhaps are not starting as many games. We'll be looking into this in more detail in a future article.

It's also interesting to note that in the first four days of 2017, there has already been almost three times as many achievement unlocks as there were in the forty-odd days after the Xbox 360 was released in 2005!

Achievement Unlocks By Platform

As you would expect given its age and popularity, the vast majority (almost exactly 75%) of the achievements were unlocked on the Xbox 360. Impressively, the Xbox One is doing a pretty good job of catching up with over 23% of the unlocks. Windows Phone is a distant third, with Windows fourth, but we would expect the latter's share to grow as Microsoft continue to promote Xbox gaming on the PC.

Games With Most Achievement Unlocks

The Halo Series dominates the top 10 of the games with the most unlocks. Halo: The Master Chief Collection takes first place, something that is unsurprising given that it has a whopping 600 achievements spread across its five classic titles. It is also the only Xbox One title in the top 10, with Xbox 360 titles comprising the other 9 places.

The Gears of War and Call of Duty series also each have two entries in a top 10 that is dominated by classic shooters.

Achievement Unlocks By Game Genre

Given the top 10 games chart above, and perhaps proving the stereotype of the typical gamer, most achievement unlocks (27%) come from Shooters. Right on the tail of that comes the Action-Adventure genre with 25%, and Role Playing games also take a healthy piece of the pie with a not-inconsiderable 12%. Sports and Racing games only account for around 6% of unlocks each.

Most Won Achievements

Interestingly, the top 5 most won achievements all come from different games, with Xbox 360 freebie Hexic HD taking the number one spot:

Hexic HDCluster BusterThe Cluster Buster achievement in Hexic HD worth 5 pointsGet a total of 25 combos across all of your games.

Gears of WarPrison BreakoutThe Prison Breakout achievement in Gears of War worth 10 pointsCompleted tutorial level on any skill level

Halo 3LandfallThe Landfall achievement in Halo 3 worth 21 pointsFinish the first mission of the Campaign on Normal, Heroic, or Legendary.

Unlocked Achievement Gamerscore Distribution

As you may have guessed, 10 Gamerscore value achievements make up a large percentage of the achievement unlocks. Almost 30% of them are "regular" 10 pointers.

There's a healthy spread of other values too, with almost 1% of our unlocks coming from those beautiful 100 Gamerscore achievements! Interestingly, while 0 Gamerscore achievements make up over 2% of the total achievements on the Xbox platform, they only make up 0.6% of our unlocks. Developers take note: please give your achievements some score!

Yo! Rich here - I was the one that created TrueAchievements back in 2008 as I felt the Xbox Gamerscore system could be improved. The site has evolved massively since then and it's now the biggest and best Xbox community on the planet! Racing games and open world shooters are my thing, but I'll give most genres a go. Except RPGs - those things are evil.
