Psychonauts 2 Developer Diary

Double Fine Productions CEO Tim Schafer presents a video update on the development of Psychonauts 2, which has now entered full production ready for a 2018 release.


The video shows off the new model for hero Raz, built by the same person who worked on the model for the original Psychonauts game. Raz now has all his core moves built as well as mechanisms for interacting with the environment, and can be seen in action in a couple of test environments.

The video also gives insight into the process of developing levels by "whiteboxing", which involves using plain white (or in this case grey) shapes to define and refine level layout and design prior to having the art team replace the plain shapes with real 3D models and add textures and lighting.

While the team at Double Fine Productions knows what they will be doing with the characters and story of Psychonauts 2, many decisions about development of content will only be made later in the development process. As such the environments seen in this developer diary may change considerably before the game is released.

Psychonauts 2 is expected to be released on Xbox One in late 2018.

We don't have them yet, but we'll publish a story as soon as we pick up the Psychonauts 2 achievements.
