The year is 2031, with Earth reduced to a post-apocalyptic landscape, after billions of people were wiped out by the impact of an "extinction-level" asteroid in Hybrid
. Deep within the asteroid lay a single-celled alien bacterium, which spread into Earth's atmosphere after the impact. Half of the survivors of the initial collision were infected, and their genes were genetically altered. These people became known as the Variant, whilst the immune became known as the Paladin. After six years of segregation, the Variant are waging a global war against the Paladin, in an attempt to establish a new world order.
5th Cell have revealed few gameplay details so far, but the XBLA game will be appearing at next month's Game Developers Conference, with more details promised to follow:
Featuring a persistent online world war, Hybrid allows gamers to play online with friends and hundreds of thousands of other players across a single, unified world server. Players can choose a hero from one of two factions, the Variant or the Paladin, as they level up to unlock upgrades, abilities, armor, weapons, and more to aid their faction in capturing territories and countries, leading to global domination.
Hybrid will introduce "Combat Focused Movement", an innovative new system unique to the shooter genre. Additional details about this new game play mechanic will be released soon.

Unfortunately the release date for Hybrid
does not get any more specific than 2011.
