Call of Duty: WWII Directors Share Multiplayer and Campaign Details

By Roland Chansen,
Sledgehammer directors Aaron Halon and Bret Robbins shared additional details about Call of Duty: WWII with PlayStation.Blog’s Rhys Sutheran. The discussion revealed more information on new multiplayer features and what players can expect to experience with the campaign.

Call of Duty: WWII

First, a new social space will be introduced in Call of Duty: WWII called Headquarters. This new zone allows players to interact between multiplayer games. Headquarters will include a firing range for weapon testing and allow players to pick up daily challenges. The social space will also tie in with some other new features, including divisions.

Divisions are a new feature that will help define the gameplay experience and appear to be similar to class selections. These divisions are: mountain, infantry, airborne, armored, or expedition. Each division will focus on different weapons and styles of combat. Divisions will integrate with the new headquarters zone through training modes. Players will not be locked into a single division and can experience each of the specialties.

A new competitive multiplayer experience is called “War Mode.” This objective-based game mode strives to pull players away from the strict mentality of maintaining a high kill/death ratio toward a cooperative mission experience. Teams will be pit against each other with a variety of objectives related to historically-based combat scenarios, such as assaulting or defending a strategic point or building, or escorting heavy armor across a bridge.

The focus on teamwork will also extend to the campaign. The story mode will feature a squad system that will improve team performance via morale boosts. Improving morale will give squad members additional skills like first aid or improved covering fire.

Finally, Robbins shared that a military historian is working with the team to ensure a faithful representation of WWII throughout the campaign. Players can expect to experience battles like the Normandy landing, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of Paris. The story will focus on events that gameplay can represent well, while also including cinematic features.

Call of Duty: WWII releases on November 3rd for Xbox One.
