The August update has arrived for Gears of War 4
and with it comes two new maps, a variety of events and a new craftable character.
Forge Blitz is the first new map and is a faster paced evolution of the game's existing Forge map, with changes that have been inspired by the latter's use as a Gears Esports Pro Circuit map. The Control Room no longer has secondary entrances but has more angles and cover options. The elbow behind the Incinerator has been removed but the only way that you can tell if the Incinerator is about to fire is if flames appear inside. The two exits from both of the spawn areas have been tightened to cut down on the amount of open space and other increased opportunites for aggressive battles. The second "new" map is Canals, which returns from Gears of War
and Gears of War 2
. Set in the city of Timgad, the map consists of three bridges over a shallow canal. This map is long, linear and full of sniping opportunities, so the race for the Longshot pickups has always been a frantic affair. However, things aren't made easy by the dark night-time setting, with moonlight and street lamps providing the only illumination.
As usual, both of these maps are now available for Season Pass holders if they make their way into the Developer Playlist that also offers double XP and 20% bonus credits. If you're not a Season Pass holder, your access to the maps begins on August 8th when they enter public matchmaking. You can see a video preview of both of the maps below.
This month's craftable character is somebody that you'll never be allowed to forget — it's Classic Commando Dom.
As mentioned above, there's also a variety of events. Running for the entirety of the month is Summer of Gears. When playing versus, players will receive an increase in the number of credits awarded for the first win of the day. Instead of the standard 100 credits, players will now receive 500 credits for their first win every single day during August.
August 18th is the date to mark in your calendar for the start of the monthly Horde event. There are no details yet but players can still take part in the current event while they wait. Thanks to this update, the "Anything Goes" challenges can also now be played on any map in Private matches. The new Versus event begins on August 25th: Classic One Shot One Kill on Canals.
Also arriving soon is a second season of the Gears Pro Circuit. The Diner, Impact, and The Slab maps have all received improvements to their Escalation ring placements in anticipation of the season. Meanwhile Lift has received a change to a weapon pickup. Players can already check them out these changes for themselves but you can see a visual representation of the ring placements below.

- Windows 10: Fixed a rare issue that could cause Season Pass to not function correctly
The Coalition finished their own notes by mentioning that they're aware that scrapping duplicates of customisation items will reset the player's selection for that item. A fix for this will be included in a future update.
