Almost one year after launch, The Coalition is still churning out monthly updates for Gears of War 4
. We've already heard a few details of the September update, which includes plans to alter
the Chest Candy achievement. Now The Coalition has released details
of a matchmaking update that includes something that will also affect achievement hunters — the removal of regional matchmaking. They've also discussed Season 2 ranked and more.
According to The Coalition, "removing regional matchmaking means players will have more people to match with, resulting in higher quality matches." It'll allow lesser-populated regions such as Australia or Southeast Asia to join up with players across the world, lessening queue times and allowing access to a broader pool of players. However, this could negatively affect those who utilize boosting methods to earn certain achievements, where gamers purposely queue in a low-population server so they can be put in a game with their boosting partners. This was often used with the Chest Candy achievement
, though it may not be as necessary with the harder ribbons being removed from the achievement requirements.
Along with the region roll-ups, players will be able to see ping on the scoreboard. The matchmaking system will attempt to put players in a game where they have the best latency, in addition to skill-based matchmaking. The result should be "higher quality matches with the lowest possible latency."
The Coalition have also answered a few questions about when Season 2 ranked will begin and how that will proceed:
When will we get these changes in game?
The transition from Regional to Quality of Service (QoS) based matchmaking will take place with our September Update. Following the release of QoS matchmaking, we will implement the skill-based matchmaking improvements with the launch of Ranked Season 2.
When is Ranked Season 2 taking place?
Ranked Season 2 is now targeted to take place beginning mid-September, barring any delays to implement these matchmaking improvements. We want to make sure these improvements are in place to provide the fairest playing field possible going into next Season. Stay tuned for a specific date announcement in September.
Will you be combining Xbox One and Windows 10 Ranks at any point?
Yes! We are planning to have one uniformed ranking system rather than on a per-platform basis moving into Season 2. We’ll announce more details of this transition closer to the time.
What about the Placement rewards?
Rewards are based on your highest Rank during the Season, rather than your final placement. For example, if you get to Diamond and then have a run of losses that brings you down to Onyx, don’t worry - you’ve secured your Diamond Reward for that playlist.
Double the planned weapon skins will also be handed out as an apology for the delay of Season 2 Ranked, which was supposed to start in mid-July or August. The picture below shows a full Diamond set, but Gold and Onyx will also be given out to players who have earned them.
- Team Deathmatch: Lancer, Snub
- King Of The Hill: Overkill, Hammerburst
- Dodgeball: Dropshot, Retro Lancer
- Guardian: Boltok, Enforcer
- Arms Race: Markza Mk. 1, EMBAR
- Warzone: Boomshot, Torque Bow
- Escalation: Gnasher, Snub
- Execution: Longshot, Boltok
The matchmaking changes will go live with the September update. As for the rewards, The Coalition says they "will be granted to your account within 2 weeks of the end of Season 1. Season 0 Rewards will also roll out sometime around the Season 2 transition."
