THQ Nordic and Experiment 101 Announce Biomutant

By Rebecca Smith, 3 months ago
Most of the news to come out of Gamescom has been new trailers or screenshots for games that we already knew existed. THQ Nordic decided to buck that trend and revealed a new game coming from developer Experiment 101: Biomutant. Set in a post-apocalyptic universe, the End is nigh for the New World. The Tree of Life is bleeding to death through its roots and a plague is corrupting the land. The world's Tribes are divided and they either need to be reunited or all taken down — your decision will effect how this story ends.

The open environments of the New World can be explored however you wish. Travel by foot, mech, jet-ski, air balloon and other forms of transport. You'll cross the dying wildlands, explore the tunnels and bunkers of the underworld, climb up mountains or make your way out to the archipelago. Throughout you'll meet many creatures, both friendly and not-so-friendly. Combat is through a "martial arts style combat system" that allows players to mix shooting, melee and special powers. New Wushu combat styles can be learned as you progress and meet combat masters across the world.

Your character can be customised through its genetic structure that not only changes its appearance but also the way that it plays. Along the way, exposure to bio-contamination will cause physical mutations like mantis claws and barbed tails. Meanwhile, exposure to radiation in the old world bunkers will affect your mind and unlock psi-mutations such as telekinesis and levitation. Not only can you customise your genetics, you can also customise your equipment. A gas mask and oxygen tank will help in the Dead Zones, whereas protective gear is more important when taking on bio-contaminated creatures.

Finally, you'll also be able to customise your weapons where parts can be mixed and matched to create something that is unique to you. Go for a single- or double-handed slashing weapon, a melee weapon that will crush its enemies or a blade whose main purpose is to pierce. There will be rifles, revolvers and shotguns that can be modified with attachments like battery-powered chainsaws or bio-contaminated sludge vials. Some characters will create modifications for you and you'll even be able to modify your Automaton sidekick.

You'll get to investigate this weird and wonderful word with your carefuuly created creature when the game launches for Xbox One in 2018.
