Despite the current video game climate having a heavy focus on online play, there are always gamers who cannot, or choose not to, speak verbally with other players. This realization has made it a top priority for developers of online games to offer communication options for players who have no intention of chatting over their microphones. In a behind-the-scenes video, Rare showed off their non-verbal communication options for Sea of Thieves
Senior Designer Andrew Preston walks viewers through the system in the below video. Sea of Thieves
features radial menus that allow players to select from eight common phrases. The phrases are context-specific; for example, if a player is standing next to the ship's wheel, there will be options related to the wheel that vary from responses near other equipment or if a player is not standing by anything at all. Of course, there is still voice chat, should you prefer to just say what you're thinking.
