February 2011 Indie Games Spotlight

By mancide, 5 years ago
Welcome to the second edition of the Indie Games Spotlight here at TrueAchievements! This month's edition features games that were all suggested by our community! Don't worry, I still played and vetted the games to make sure quality games are being placed in the spotlight.

The first two games I will highlight this month were suggested by https://www.trueachievements.com/maiden+of+haste.htm:

First, Square Off:

Blast, dodge and disintegrate your alien enemies in a desparate bid to save humanity. Wield shotguns, bombs and missiles going it solo or in a 2-4 player co-op frenzy. Better yet, destroy your friends in hilariously epic deathmatch action. Features beautiful sound and graphics, LIVE online highscores, hordes of vicious aliens and absolutely loads of addictive fun.

Square Off brings a twist to the dual-stick shooter genre, instead of your right stick controlling your aim and trigger, you will use the right stick to aim your weapon, but you still need to depress the right trigger depending on what type of weapon you are currently wielding. This game also presents you with wave after wave of ever increasing difficulty and insanity. I simply loved the art direction in this game, as this is one of the best looking games I've seen on the Xbox Live Indie Games platform, and I even caught myself forgetting that all of this crazy, gorgeous fun was had for only 80 MSP.

Next up, Nuclear Wasteland:

Take on wave after wave of Mutants! By 2030 nuclear waste has mutated many locals, who have taken over a military base; and its your job to clean them up! Unlock Assault Rifles, a Submachine Gun, a Shotgun, Health depot's and Ammunition bunkers to help get the job done! 80 point FPS with all the doors blown off!

Do you love old-school style first person shooters? Do you love surviving waves of crazed zombiesmutants who are hell-bent on your demise? If so, Nuclear Wasteland is the game for you! This great little horde-based shooter pits you in a small desert town fighting through wave after wave of mutant survivors. You unlock buildings scattered around the town that allow you to heal, ammo up, or upgrade your weapons. This game brought me back to the days of my first playthough of Doom with the retro feel to the graphics, and the constant feeling of "am I going to survive this?" Another steal at only 80 MSP.

Greggie Smallzz suggested I check out Blocks Indie:

The object of Blocks is to deliver a wooden create to a magical floating island using a jet-powered platform. Along the path to the island, you are confronted with obstacles designed to impede your progress. You must dodge moving blocks, squeeze through tight spaces, and turn sharp corners at blinding speeds. Blocks will rock your socks!

Blocks Indie is a puzzle game I could lose lots of time in. Just challenging and addictive enough to keep you replaying a level over and over until you get that "gold-perfection" award for the level! The basic premise of Blocks Indie is you have to navigate a crate through a maze using only your right and left triggers to control the respective thrusters on the side of the platform. The tricky part is, you can only fire one thruster at a time, and the OCD inducing portion is, to get the perfection award you can not hit any of the environmental obstacles. While the introductory puzzles are quite simplistic, the difficulty ramps up after you have the basics down. Get your puzzle solving delivery boy experience for only 240 MSP.

Our last game this month comes as a suggestion from fellow newshound Matrarch, who suggested the game Astroman.

Explore vast alien landscapes! Zap all of the aliens! Hey, they were blocking your view.

RELEASE DATE: 12/23/2010
DEVELOPER: StarQuail
GENRE: Platformer

FEATURES
Offline players 1

First off, I love the art-style in this game. I felt as if I was playing in a children's story book. I think that really brings a unique feel to what is essentially, a basic platforming game. While there are some space-shooter levels to add variety, the basic premise has you exploring alien worlds with your zapper to blast the different types of hostile aliens out of your path. The limited ammo of your zapper forces you to be a bit more cautious with your blasts, as you don't want to run out of juice in the middle of a swarm of hostile creatures. You can pick up this space-themed platformer for 240 MSP.

If you have a suggestion for an Indie Game you feel should be included in a future Indie Games Spotlight, please send a PM to mancide with your suggestion.

When not enjoying video games, our fearless newshound enjoys an nice pint of fermented barley and hops in a variety of styles. India Pale Ales, Stouts, Porters, Witbiers, Saisons, Gose, Lambics, Barleywine, you name it. If it has water, malted barley, hops and yeast in it, I'll consume it. I also enjoy all things technological, Doctor Who, wrasslin, traveling, and spending time with my family.
