Microsoft confirmed today that the beta for Gears of War 3 will begin on April 18th for those who own Epic Edition. The Beta will then be expanded to other players on April 25th.

If Bulletstorm Epic Edition wasn't on your games-to-purchase list and you want access to the April 25th start date however, you're going to have to pre-order Gears of War 3. Microsoft also took this opportunity to announce that Gears 3 will be available in three varieties: A Standard Edition, A Limited Edition, and an Epic Edition. The Limited and Epic Editions will cost more than the standard game, unlike the Epic Edition of Bulletstorm. Your pre-order will grant you beta access through the beta's close date on May 15th. Keep in mind that the pre-order has to come from select retailers, a list of which was handily provided by Microsoft:

In Canada:

In the UK:

In Italy:

In Australia:

In New Zealand:

From the first day of the beta, Team Deathmatch mode will be available for play on the four new maps, which are Thrashball, Checkout, Trenches, and Old Town. Capture the Leader and King of the Hill gameplay modes will be added later in the Beta period. A surprise event weekend has also been announced, though there are no further details about that just yet

As noted in a previous article which covered some game details, several unlockables will be made available in the core game for those who participate in the demo and accomplish specific tasks. Microsoft further detailed these unlcokables as well:

Beta Tester Medal - Complete one match in the beta to unlock the Beta Tester medal, which will carry over to your gamer profile in the final game. The Beta Tester title will be featured in the Gears 3 multiplayer lobby as well.

Thrashball Cole - Complete 50 matches in any game type to unlock the Thrashball Cole character variant in the beta. Once unlocked, complete 10 matches as Thrashball Cole during the beta and the character will carry over to your gamer profile in the final game.

Gold-Plated Retro Lancer - Show your ultimate Gears of War fandom by unlocking the Gold-Plated Retro Lancer. Complete 90 matches in any game type to unlock it for the beta, and score 100 kills with it once unlocked to carry the exclusive weapon skin over to your gamer profile in the final game.

Flaming Hammerburst - Complete one match by Sunday, 24 April and unlock this weapon variant.

Flaming Lancer - Complete one match during the week of 25 April and unlock this weapon variant.

Flaming Sawed-Off Shotgun - Complete one match during the week of 2 May to unlock this weapon variant.

Flaming Gnasher Shotgun - Complete one match during the week of 9 May to unlock this weapon variant.
Gears of War 3, and all of your beta bonuses, will be available on September 20th.

Eagle-eyed gamer Jyejitsu informed us that if you are in Belgium or the Netherlands, you can get a Beta token for Gears 3 if you purchase a three or twelve month Xbox Live Gold Subscription (while supplies last) from Gamemania.
