Shields Arrive in The Division, Use Them to Unlock Rewards in The Division 2

By Rebecca Smith,
Tom Clancy's The Division 2 may well be stealing the limelight at E3, but that doesn't mean Massive Entertainment has forgotten all about the game's predecessor, Tom Clancy's The Division. In fact, the team has just released update 1.8.2 for the latter title, and its main feature is the introduction of Shields. These are a series of collectibles that players earn for completing challenges. If players unlock multiple shields, they'll be able to use them to earn rewards in The Division 2.

There are 12 Shields for players to unlock in The Division. The first four went live today and the remaining eight will be unveiled at a pace of one per month beginning in July. Both long term and new players can complete the objectives, and if they're objectives that a long-term player has already done, the shield will unlock retroactively. Completing a shield objective gives the player a Shield Cache that contains valuable items and currency bundles. As mentioned above, earning multiple shields will get players exclusive rewards in The Division 2.

The Shields can be found in the first tab of the player's dossier. The four Shields active now are:

  • Shepherd – Unlock the Base of Operations.
  • Hazard – Clear 25 landmarks in the Dark Zone.
  • Deadeye – Complete all weekly HVT’s within a week.
  • Avenger – Take out 10 named bosses in Manhattan, 10 in the Dark Zone and 10 in the West Side Piers area.
The rest of the gameplay additions and changes with this patch can be found in the spoiler below:

During the Inside Xbox show broadcast during E3, Creative Director Julian Gerighty joined Xbox's Benny Perkins to discuss the Shields, as well as more details on Specialisations, Raids, new weapons, new enemies, new animations, and the game’s setting.

Update 1.8.2 is available now in The Division. The Division 2 will arrive on March 15th, 2019.
