Sony Policy Changes Allow Fortnite Cross-Play Between PS4, Xbox One and Switch

By Kelly Packard,
Fortnite has officially become the first game with cross-play and cross-progression features between Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The changes went into open beta on PlayStation 4 today, representing a major policy change for Sony.

Fortnite on PlayStation 4 has already had cross-play between PC and mobile platforms for some months, but Sony never allowed PlayStation users to mix with Xbox One or Nintendo Switch players, despite Microsoft and Nintendo repeatedly expressing support for players of the competing consoles to mingle. In the meantime, games like Rocket League and Paladins: Champions of the Realm supported Xbox One-Nintendo Switch cross-play while Sony continued to be the odd man out. This all changed today when Sony announced that Fortnite on PlayStation 4 now lets PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Windows and Mac users play together at the same time.

"The communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players," posted John Kodera, President and Global CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony will keep players updated with "what this means for other titles going forward."

As for Fortnite specifically, developer Epic Games addressed what will happen for players who had to create a new account to play on different platforms that were not compatible with each other.

The news sets an interesting precedent as game developers — and now all three major console companies — have realized that cross-play is beneficial to both businesses and consumers. As 2018 heads toward the fall release season, we can't help but wonder if this will mean Xbox and PlayStation will continue to play nice for cross-play in upcoming games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Battlefield V or any of the other major releases coming out over the next few months, although it might be too short of notice for these games to have cross-play implemented before launch.
