IO Interactive Opens A New Studio In Sweden

By Andy Mills, 1 month ago
You may recall that not too long ago, things were looking quite grim for Hitman series developer IO Interactive. While HITMAN (2016) was well received by those who played it, the episodic nature split the gaming public, and midway through 2017, Square Enix announced they'd be parting ways with the studio. Since going independent, however, it looks like there's been quite the turnaround for the Danish developer. In addition to releasing HITMAN 2 and the very recent HD re-releases of Hitman: Blood Money and Hitman: Absolution, the developer is set to grow with IOI Malmö, a new studio they've opened in neighbouring Sweden.

In addition to helping the original studio in Copenhagen with the HITMAN series, this new studio will also be helping to create new games and, if all goes well, new franchises. Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Ineractive, was naturally excited about the news, having this to say about the expansion:

We are super excited and proud to announce IOI Malmö. We will expand IOI to join a buzzling game developer community and bring our own unique IOI culture to this amazing town. Furthermore, this will expand our muscles for creating brand-new and exciting endeavours, new universes, new franchises. In other words, IOI Malmö and Copenhagen are one family. The IOI expansion in Malmö was a natural choice as there is a very strong existing video game industry. I believe it has all opportunities to become the epicentre of game development in Scandinavia.
Well, that's certainly an improvement to a year or so ago! Naturally, we wish IOI Malmö the best going forward. If they're anywhere near as good as their older sibling, there could be some more special games on the way from Scandinavia.
