Fortnite has continued to reign at the top of the Xbox Gameplay Chart for the last couple of weeks. However, this week we had the biggest retail release of the month, and several weekend events. Has this given us a new title in the top spot? Let's take a look at the top 40 most played games in the full chart below.
There's a new number one and it's not the game we might have been expecting! The free Blackout trial continued in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and it was enough to push it over the top of Fortnite and into the top spot. Remaining with the top 10, that aforementioned retail release, Resident Evil 2 made an impressive debut at #6. The release of new content for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds pushed that up three places into #5, while Destiny 2 climbs back into the top 10 at #10, perhaps due to a surge in interest after the developer declared its independence from Activision.
There are a few big shakers this week too. Star Wars Battlefront II climbs eight places to #33 because of the release of a new hero and the latest game update. ARK: Survival Evolved's Game Pass popularity begins to wane and sees that title drop six spots to #27, while ex-Game With Gold title Celeste drops a further six spots to #31. Current Game With Gold title WRC 6 fares even worse, dropping 13 places to #35, while the list is completed by SMITE. The latter dropped eight spots to #36 despite a patch that brought new cosmetics in preparation for Season 6.
It wasn't all bad news for Hi-Rez Studio, though. Realm Royale entered open beta this week and made its debut in the chart at #29 as a result. The other new entry, Dragon Ball FighterZ, benefitted from free Xbox Live Gold Play Days over the weekend and saw a large boost of players trying out the title — it enters at #20. The final title that deserves a mention is Shadow of the Tomb Raider, whose new "Nightmare" DLC sees it climb several places and re-enter the charts at #39.
The latest Xbox Game Pass release, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was nowhere to be seen in the chart. So far we don't know what to expect from Microsoft over the coming weeks for the programme. Will we see more titles this week? If not, new retail release Kingdom Hearts III will definitely be trying to make its mark, while there will also be a new Game With Gold. Don't forget to tune in to see what next week will bring, and in the meantime, you can subscribe to get alerts for all future Xbox Gameplay Charts here.
