In an interview with Polygon, senior BioWare staff have confirmed that they have every intention of returning to the Mass Effect Series at some point in the future, once a couple of big projects are out of the way.
The full interview is a very interesting read exploring Anthem's surprisingly long development period and the thought behind BioWare jumping in a different direction.
Anthem's Game Director Jonathan Warner would love to get involved in EA's Star Wars properties, but a Knights of the Old Republic revival is still non-existent according to him. Studio General Manager Casey Hudson points to the continued success of The Old Republic on PC and intends to continue investing in that project rather than moving on to anything else.
But for Mass Effect fans the final few paragraphs contain a little interesting detail. While there's no firm plans, the team are clearly still keen to return to Shepard's universe. Mark Darrah, Executive Producer of Anthem and the Dragon Age Series, sees a couple of ways forward:
"We’re definitely not done with Mass Effect. There’s a lot of stories to be told. We could pull on the threads we put down with Andromeda; we could pull on threads from Mass Effect 3. There’s a lot of interesting space to be explored."What about Casey? Well, he's already trolled fans by sipping out of an N7 mug at the end of a behind-the-scenes video, but here he makes a more solid commitment to returning eventually:
“In my mind, it’s very much alive. I’m thinking all the time about things that I think will be great. It’s just a matter of getting back to it as soon as we can.”In the meantime, we have Anthem and the next Dragon Age to look forward to. Anthem releases on February 22nd. The next Dragon Age has been confirmed but no further details have been given, including a release window.
