For the past year or so, Cristiano Ronaldo has been front-and-centre of the FIFA series, on the covers of both FIFA 18 and FIFA 19. But in a mid-season refresh for the most recent title, the Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid and current Juventus star has been replaced by the talented trio of Neymar from Paris Saint Germain; Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne and Juventus team-mate Paulo Dybala, with the three players also replacing Ronaldo on the game's start screen and women's football star Alex Morgan chosen for the game's menus. You can see the new cover for yourselves below.
It has been a controversial few months for Cristiano Ronaldo with the player found guilty of tax evasion in Spain as well as an allegation of rape also following the player. In a statement to Eurogamer however, an EA spokesperson stated that the refresh was related to UEFA Champions League license that the publisher acquired this year, even with Ronaldo still playing for one of the tournament favourites.
With the UEFA Champions League coming to EA Sports FIFA 19 this year, we have a unique opportunity to offer a range of new content to players that reflects the real-world excitement of football. We often celebrate different talent across our sports games, and with the UEFA Champions League knockout stages underway we are featuring some of the biggest stars in football and bringing new players a range of content to get excited about.Regardless of the reasoning, Ronaldo seems to no longer be the star of FIFA 19 and football fans can instead expect to see Neymar, De Bruyne and Dybala when they boot up the game from now on.
