The Best Xbox One Third-Person Shooters Available in 2019

By Dave Horobin, 22 days ago
Whilst the "shooter box" nickname might have faded away during the current console generation, the Xbox is arguably still the best place to play if you like shooters. If you like your shooters to be of the third-person variety, that might be even more true thanks to a solid line-up of exclusives and a rapidly growing number of multiplatform titles hitting the Xbox store every month.

The list of third-person shooters on the Xbox One is already huge, offering a diverse range of gameplay, settings and tones to cater to a wide range of tastes. Choosing which third-person shooter to pick up next might seem like a daunting task, so we're here to help you narrow down the choice by using a combination of site review scores and your community ratings to put together our list of the best Xbox One third-person shooters available in 2019.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2's vast, detailed and stunningly beautiful open world sits as the perfect backdrop for its compelling and well-paced story filled with epic set pieces. With deeper gameplay mechanics, a larger cast of diverse and interesting characters to meet, and a wealth of content from side objectives to mini-games, RDR2 is a shining example of what makes Rockstar's games so special. It might have been a long eight-year wait for a follow-up to Red Dead Redemption, but it's been well worth it as the game may go down as the greatest of this generation. Few games have ever had as much hype around them as this one, and yet few have ever met and even exceeded their expectations in the way Red Dead Redemption 2 has.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Online Screens 01

The Phantom Pain is the kind of game that actually feels as if every seemingly insignificant gameplay detail actually has a real purpose. Every mission, side-op and minute spent assigning staff back at Mother Base makes a real difference to what can or cannot be achieved out on the field. At its core, it is still a stealth-action game, but it never ties you down to just being stealthy. Every mission can be approached in a multitude of different ways and it's left up to the player how to progress. The more manageable approach to storytelling may not seem true to the Metal Gear Solid series to date, but it fits in well with the game's more flexible approach, which lets people attack the game head on or play in smaller bites without needing to worry that at any moment they may have to set aside an hour purely to watch a surprise cut-scene.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

Starting off as a mod for the PC shooter ARMA, PUBG took the gaming world by storm when it released on Steam, selling over 20 million copies in early access. Whilst other games had included battle royale modes, PUBG was the first game to gain major traction and bring the genre to the place it is now. When it finally dropped into Xbox Game Preview in 2017, before releasing properly in December 2018, the game has continued to improve with the addition of new maps and gameplay tweaks. It might not be the hottest new thing that everyone is talking about these days, but it still has an army of loyal and passionate players.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition

Gear of War: Ultimate Edition

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition stands as a shining example of how a remaster should be done. From the ground up the game has been redesigned to make it look and feel perfectly at home on the Xbox One, and The Coalition has managed to combine remaining true to the original game, whilst at the same time adding improvements. By staying true to the original Gears there are moments where the game shows its age, but they aren’t frequent enough to spoil the overall experience, and you’ll be more surprised by how well the story and gameplay mechanics stand up to today’s standards, and quite often overshadow them. If you're not a fan of third-person shooters or the previous Gears of War games, there's nothing for you here. For everyone else the name says it all – this is the Ultimate way to experience Gears of War. Whether you're a newcomer to the franchise, or if you’re looking for any excuse to return to Sera and chainsaw Locusts into tiny pieces, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a must play.

Sunset Overdrive

SO main

Sunset Overdrive is a blast to play; it looks great, it feels great, it pushes the limits of both the player and the console without straining either. It's why games were games in the first place. It may not be much more than a wacky, immature and explosive adventure that tries too hard to poke fun at itself and dazzle its players with gimmicks, but Sunset Overdrive has it where it counts. It's plain and simple while over-the-top ridiculous, charming while offensive, exceptional while exceptionally tacky. In short, Sunset Overdrive is fun.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 has managed to take all of the best bits from the first game, build on them and then add more good things on top of them. All of our favourite characters are back, whilst the newer characters that have been introduced are fun to play. One of the biggest improvements is the addition of the Backyard Battleground hub base, and the addition of the single player focused quests, missions and collectables means that this game appeals to both single and multiplayer gamers more than ever. The bright colours and fun gameplay are ever present and there isn't a lot going wrong here apart from some issues with the sound and music. For fans of the first Garden Warfare game, this sequel is a must play. For those who haven't had the chance to experience the plants and zombies war yet, it's hard to find a reason not to recommend this game.

Quantum Break

Jack Joyce

Thus far as a studio, Remedy has a long history of creating games that focus on two key ideas: providing unconventional gameplay that brings something new to shooters and presenting it in a story rich with characters, background lore, and more than a few twists. Quantum Break hits on both of these tenets and does so in what feels like their most well-rounded game to date. The time manipulation powers are as special as Max Payne's "bullet time" or Alan Wake's fighting with light. The time travel storyline is one that lends itself to discussion, speculation, and adoration among genre fans. Both of these things are then aided by a great cast and truly stunning audio and visual design. Not without missteps, Quantum Break is still an exceptional title that takes chances and looks like the makings of a successful new franchise. In short, it's a hell of a time.

Watch_Dogs 2

Trailer Clips 26-Oct

Watch_Dogs 2 definitely improves on its predecessor in almost every way. Marcus is a much more enjoyable person with whom to spend time and even though DedSec is hipster central, it's a fun journey that you'll have here. There's a better city to explore this time around and a whole bunch of exciting missions to find and complete, as well as the feeling of saving and changing lives as you do so. Unfortunately, there are still some minor bugs scattered about and the issues with the multiplayer means that the seamless experience that we were promised has not quite hit its mark. These issues aside, Watch_Dogs 2 is easily recommendable for anyone who liked the premise of the first one but longed for improvements. This is the new reality, so don't miss a chance to be a part of it.

Tom Clancy's The Division

Update 1.8

The Division’s dense and stunningly recreated version of New York City provides an interesting environment for you to explore, and the overall story arc ties each of its components together in a cohesive way. As a cover-based shooter it’s more than competent and will provide an entertaining and worthwhile experience for those of you that want to play through the story and then move on to the next game. If the enticement of better loot and stat optimization catches hold of you, however, there’s a chance that The Division may well become your next addiction thanks to a host of post-launch tweaks and updates.

L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire remaster

L.A. Noire is a great game. The six years since its original launch haven't changed that. The imagining of 1940s Los Angeles is massive and detailed, and every aspect of the game feels meticulous and polished. The well-woven story edges out any gameplay complaints or issues that arose in the original game. All the DLC and additional challenges are here — albeit some of it has been inserted less than tactfully — making the Xbox One version a nice compilation for players who missed this gem from last gen. The value drops significantly for returning players, partially due to already knowing the conclusion to L.A. Noire's engaging and memorable mystery.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Achievements

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a sequel that does a lot well, although its biggest detriment is how safely the developers seemed to play it. A lot of the game will feel like more of the same, which for some may start to wear thin three lengthy games into the series. If you're not yet fatigued by the familiarity, or if you focus on spending your skill points on the great but weirdly missable new stuff, it's a much more enjoyable game. It has the flavor of a summer blockbuster. You know what you're getting with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and while you can't say it breaks through any boundaries or leaves you stunned for long after the credits roll, it's fun while it lasts and remains an exciting third act to Lara's reimagined origin story.

Just Cause 4

30/11/2018 - Carousel

Just Cause 4 gives off a bad first impression with new systems poorly explained and a visual downgrade apparently seeking to solve the series' previous performance woes. Get just a few hours in, though, and you'll have unlocked Rico's trinity of toys that combine to make this sequel Rico's best coup d'etat yet. Dispatching enemies and blowing up bases have never been more fun given the game's new tools. Despite issues in several areas, Just Cause is ultimately about the scale of its action moments over which players have complete control, and the free-form sandbox in which players run amok. To these ends Just Cause 4 is the best in the series.

Sniper Elite 4

1

Sniper Elite 4 is a game that mainly succeeds at what it sets out to be. Thanks to an emphasis on freedom, you'll be able to play however you want. Sniping can be frustrating but ultimately effective if you want to make it work, while players who prefer less precise strategies will find a home here too. The entire game can be played with a friend and it's a fantastic co-op experience thanks to the many ways you can tackle a mission. However, the game is held back by poor balancing that renders the silenced pistol the most effective weapon, the truly awful AI that seems to actively try to not detect you even if you run in front of them, and a lack of worthwhile activities to play outside of the main campaign. If you hear the premise of Sniper Elite 4 and your first thought is "Wow does that sound awesome," then it's probably a game out of which you'll get some joy. For anyone else, it's a game worth playing but it might be better to wait for a sale.

Gears of War 4

Gears of War 4

Gears of War 4 promised a new beginning — a new cast of characters, a new threat to humanity and the chance for a new developer to make its mark. While the gameplay and storyline certainly aren't lacking and will likely keep Gears fans amused, The Coalition seems reluctant to let the past go and to move on. Away from the campaign, there are tweaks to competitive multiplayer that include a couple of new game modes but the real focus of the title is the improved Horde mode. It delivers a lot of what fans have always loved about Gears, sometimes perhaps even to a fault. But if you can't get enough of the gnasher and other iconic weapons, characters, and roadie-running, Gears 4 is exactly what you need.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar has once again crafted an absolute masterpiece in Grand Theft Auto V. With this kind of hype, a game often falls short of the high expectations, but Grand Theft Auto V meets and exceeds them. After so many weeks of appearing at the top of the retail charts, we'd be surprised if most people don't own a copy already. If you don't, Grand Theft Auto V is a game you absolutely need to have in your collection and is something that everyone should experience and enjoy.
