New Character Cetrion Joins Mortal Kombat 11 Roster

Each month, Game Informer runs a month of exclusive features and trailers for a certain title. April's title just happens to be Mortal Kombat 11, and one of the first things they've done is to reveal a new kombatant. Cetrion has a strong connection to the Earth and her moveset features a lot of elemental abilities as a result. You can see her in action in her new trailer.

Cetrion was one of four unconfirmed kombatants revealed by yesterday's trophy list leak. The other three are returning characters Frost and Kitana, as well as a new character called Kollector. While we'll have to wait a bit longer to meet those three characters, Game Informer did provide more information on some other aspects of the game.

The game's Custom Character Variation System allows players to customise the Skins, Gear, Special Abilities, Intro and Victory Cinemas, Taunts, and Brutalities of their characters. However, because this feature could cause issues in multiplayer, NetherRealm will be introducing some limitations to the feature in those modes. There will be a set of pre-built character variants for use in ranked and tournament play, and each character will have at least two variants. This means movesets and custom abilities will be pre-determined, but the developer has confirmed the builds could change in the future depending on player feedback.

In terms of a character's custom appearance, that can be used regardless of which online mode you're playing. Players will also be able to use augments that don't affect gameplay (like those that provide bonus XP for win streaks) in ranked and tournament play. Local versus and casual online matches will be unlimited and will allow players to use whatever character variant they wish.

Netherrealm has confirmed they're planning on adding more skins and gear to the game as DLC once it has launched. The chances are this DLC will be premium, although this wasn't confirmed. However, consumable items that can be used in the Towers of Time mode can not be purchased through DLC or microtransactions, meaning those who top the leaderboards will do so through ability only. More custom moves are also not planned as DLC as they would be quite difficult to add and could affect the balance of the game.

Finally, some of the aforementioned Towers of Time will be themed around tag team battles. Players will control two characters that they can switch between with the right joystick. Because players can switch between the two characters fairly quickly, it will even be possible to string together combo strings that use both characters. There will also be group battles where two players take turns against a boss. The player who isn't engaged directly in combat can perform assist attacks. The Towers will also offer competitive co-op with leaderboards, and these will reward players with gear and items depending on how well players performed compared to others.

Mortal Kombat 11 with all of the above features will be released later this month on April 23rd.
