Despite appearing in the official list of features on the Xbox Store page yesterday, a spokesperson at 2K has stated that cross-play is not a confirmed feature of Borderlands 3 — and the tag has now been removed from the game's Xbox Store pages. It's definitely being looked at, however.
As confirmed by Gamespot via a 2K spokesperson, "Cross-play is something we're looking at closely, but we don't have anything to confirm or announce at this time."
For those wondering, any cross-play functionality would likely be referring to Xbox to PC. Borderlands 3 isn't coming to Nintendo Switch that we know of, and one would have to assume that PlayStation 4 compatibility would be delayed, if it happened at all. One snag that might be occurring is the fact that the Epic store has secured a timed exclusivity period on the game for PC sales — while that doesn't exclude the possibility of cross-play, it is a new platform for Xbox and the publishers to both negotiate with financially and test out technically.
If cross-play is officially announced or if further details on the situation appear, we'll be sure to let you know.
We don't have them yet, but we'll publish a story as soon as we pick up the Borderlands 3 achievements.
