Developer Trendy Entertainment's Dungeon Defenders franchise is popular amongst those who appreciate its blend of action-RPG and tower defense gameplay. Nearly eight years after the first game appeared on Xbox 360, the team will be completely reimagining the franchise to create a new experience called Dungeon Defenders: Awakened.
Taking place after the events of Dungeon Defenders II, players will head back into the world of Etheria as they try to track down the evil Harbinger who can alter time, reshaping the past, present, and future. The four young heroes — Apprentice, Squire, Huntress, and Monk — will need to defend their parents' castle against hordes of enemies in familiar and new locations, but those enemies will include new creatures with surprises for players. Going back to the core gameplay of Dungeon Defenders, the game will combine action-RPG mechanics with tower defense, as well as keeping third-person combat. The game will also feature improved graphics and controls, cleaner menus, and a more refined experience generally now that it's built in Unreal Engine 4.
Not only is the studio reimagining the franchise, they're also reimagining themselves. The studio will no longer be known as Trendy Entertainment, instead rebranding as Chromatic Games after a shift in management personnel and a new studio vision. That vision begins with this game, which recently reached its funding target on Kickstarter. This means it's currently aiming for a release in October this year with four-player splitscreen local co-op and four player online multiplayer.
