Fortnite Takes to the Skies in Air Royale

By Rebecca Smith, 1 month ago
The weekly Fortnite updates continue to arrive, and this week's v8.40 update puts a completely new spin on Battle Royale. The latest Limited Time Mode sees players take to the skies in Air Royale, as well as adding a new weapon for players who prefer to stay on the ground. Two new characters join the Save the World ranks, while Creative players get scoreboard customisation and an explosive new item to use.

Battle Royale players will take the wheel of the X-4 Stormwing as they battle to become the last plane flying through the skies in Air Royale. The Duos mode gives each plane three lives and players will continue to respawn until the plane is shot down for the final time. Touching the ground results in death as the plane explodes a few seconds later. Enemy planes can be hijacked for extra lives, loot chests will drop from the skies, and floating repair kits can be found across the battlefield. However, the storm has a ceiling that will gradually get lower, so you don't want to fly too high.

There's a second Limited Time Mode in the form of Food Fight - Deep Fried too. This mode splits players into two teams, each with a restaurant mascot to protect. Build forts to protect your mascot while simultaneously trying to destroy the enemy mascot and eliminate them. There has also been two more weapons added — the Egg Launcher makes its return, and the Infantry Rifle has been added in Epic and Legendary forms.

Save The World players get two new characters. The first is seasonal Soldier Bunny Brawler Luna, while the second is an "egg-citing" ninja known as Dashing Hare Ken. In terms of gameplay, the Beta Storm Test the Limits has returned with some altered rules. There are now six race gates instead of four, and a cinematic has been added to the start of the race to make it clear to players that the race has started. Players also need to prevent Husks from destroying the gates, otherwise the Platinum medal will be unobtainable.

Finally, Creative players can now customise the in-game scoreboard via the "My Island" menu. There's also the new Explosive Device, which will explode if damaged too much, in turn causing damage to nearby players and objects. Players can only place 100 Explosive Devices on a single island. The Infantry Rifle has been added here too.
