Rocket League Celebrates the 80's in Radical Summer

By Rebecca Smith, 3 months ago
A while has passed since Rocket League last had a special event, but developer Psyonix is planning on starting off the summer holidays with a bang in their latest event. Radical Summer is a celebration of the 80's, and it will be giving players a chance to grab limited-time items from films, television, and cultural greats from that era. If you ever fancied driving around the arena in an Ecto-1 or K.I.T.T., now's your chance.

The first phase of Radical Summer will begin on June 10th with Blockbusters. This part of the event will allow players to earn items from the Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, and Karate Kid, and there's the limited-time Ghost Hunt game mode. This is a 3v3 mode where players have to use proton stream power-ups to trap the ball in their opponents' Containment Zone in the Urban Central Arena, which will feature new lighting and sound effects to suit its ghostly theme. For every two seconds the ball is kept in that Containment Zone, your team gets a point. Just make sure you're the team with the most points before time runs out.

On July 1st, the Culture phase will begin and players will be able to earn items from the "iconic culture of the ‘80s". This will introduce the limited-time Spike Rush mode. In this 3v3 mode, every player has a Spike power-up that is activated to carry the ball and deactivated for players to "pull off some wild psych outs". This event will take place in the Throwback Stadium Arena.

Finally, on July 22nd, the Television phase will begin, where players can earn items from the Knight Rider, DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender, and WWE franchises. This is accompanied by the limited-time Beach Ball mode, a 2v2 game mode where players use a larger ball with low ball gravity, and there's a Curveball mutator to make things more unpredictable.

The aforementioned Ecto-1 car will be available as part of the premium "Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Car Pack" for US$1.99. This will contain the Ecto-1 Battle-Car, Ecto-1 Wheels, Proton Pack Rocket Boost, Slimer Topper, Ghostbusters Player Banner and Avatar Border, and the Stay Puft Goal Explosion. Meanwhile, K.I.T.T. will be available in the premium "Knight Rider Car Pack", although details of the exact contents of this pack weren't revealed. More details are promised for later on during the event, hopefully before its arrival on July 22nd.

In each phase, players will have three weeks to play online matches and earn Cassettes that can be redeemed for the themed event items. Golden Eggs will also return, allowing players to earn items from the Elevation, Victory, Turbo, and Nitro Crates, and you'll be able to earn five Golden eggs per phase too. The contents of the Event Store will also be changed for each event phase, so don't wait too long to pick up your most coveted items. Once the event is ended, players will get a further week to redeem any outstanding Cassettes for items they want from the store.

Radical Summer will go live next week, but a game patch has been released today that includes all of the preparations the team needs to get the event going. The event will likely be accompanied by another patch on june 10th, so keep your eyes peeled for a list of changes then.
