Guide: How to Make the Most of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate £1 / $1 / €1 Offer

By Sam Quirke, 2 months ago
The ridiculously valuable Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offer – which can see you tied up with Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC for years for just $1 – is apparently continuing for the time being, despite originally having a July 4th end-date. Microsoft are even endorsing this "life-hack" directly, so we've updated our advice with some of theirs.

Ultimate 1 Month
Ultimate 1 Month

Xbox Live Gold and over 100 high-quality games for one low monthly price. Play together with friends and discover your next favorite game. Joining Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will upgrade your remaining Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass for Console or Xbox Game Pass for PC time into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for the same amount of time, up to 36 months. All conversions are final. See for details.

What is included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate?

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate combines Xbox's existing subscriptions. Xbox Live Gold is your ticket to online play, as well as exclusive Gold discounts during weekly sales and four new games to download at no additional cost every month. Xbox Game Pass is a Netflix-style subscription service for Xbox games — though you download the games rather than stream them. There are well over 100 Xbox Game Pass games in the subscription, with some games arriving and leaving the catalogue every month. Ultimate also includes Xbox Game Pass for PC, a version of Xbox Game Pass for your Windows 10 machine. There are over 100 Xbox Game Pass for PC games in the catalogue as well, and many of these are unique to PC. Not every game in the PC Pass has achievements, though we are noticing a trickle of updates to add them in to existing games.

Why should I get Xbox Game Pass Ultimate while it's on offer?

It's a crazy deal in the first place — for a month, you get all of Xbox's services and access to 200+ games for just a single unit of your local currency. But here's where it gets incredible: If you already have any of those three Xbox subscriptions on your account, paid up until some point in the future, Xbox will upgrade that existing subscription to Ultimate — for no additional cost!

Xbox will honour this for any subscription up to 36 months into the future. So if you top up your Xbox Live Gold subscription until halfway through 2022, then pick up this Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offer for $1, you are effectively getting 36 months Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC for $1.

How much does Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Usually Cost?

Unusually, there are prices up for the whole range of subscription options, up to 24 months which will cost you a whopping $359.99 / £263.99 / €314.99. One month will normally cost $14.99 / £10.99 / €12.99.

Even on a regular month, this represents a significant saving over the three subscriptions sold separately. Xbox Live Gold as a stand-alone subscription is usually $9.99 / £6.99 / €6.99 for a month. Xbox Game Pass is usually $9.99 / £7.99 / €9.99 for a month, and Xbox Game Pass for PC is usually $9.99 / £7.99 / €9.99 for a month. Assuming you were considering getting all three anyway, a regular Ultimate month represents a saving of $14.98 / £11.98 / €13.98. Even if you aren't planning on using the PC Pass, just using Ultimate for Gold and the console Pass is a saving of $4.99 / £3.99 / €3.99 a month — nothing to shake a stick at. Obviously your mileage may vary depending on where you normally grab your monthly codes from, or if you get 6-monthly or yearly subscriptions.

Here's Microsoft's official guide to making sure you get the most of the offer, which is notably missing the part where you pick up a Gold code from a third party at a discount:

  • Start at your main Microsoft account page.
  • Go to the “Services and Subscriptions” tab at the top of the page — this will show which subscriptions you currently have on your account.
  • Before applying the “one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $1” deal to your account, extend your Xbox Live Gold subscription by buying additional months.
  • You can get 12 months of Live Gold for $59.99 or go a la carte for $9.99 per month (for the non-math fans, that means you’ll save 50% by going for a full year).
  • Now, once you’ve extended your Xbox Live Gold subscription to the desired length, it’s finally time to add the “one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $1” deal.
  • Once that deal is applied to your account, your Xbox Live Gold subscription will be converted to Game Pass Ultimate — and Game Pass Ultimate will be available for the length of your Live Gold subscription.
