Julian Gollop, the creator of the original XCOM, is back in the sci-fi strategy game Phoenix Point. In this spiritual successor to his landmark title, an alien parasite has mutated life on Earth, and it's up to an elite unit to save humanity. In an E3 episode of Inside Xbox, we got confirmation that the game is coming to Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC. Here's the new trailer showing the alien threat in shiny detail:
If you only go by the trailer above, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is just XCOM all over again. But there are some exciting differences. The biggest of these is probably the fact that the enemy is constantly mutating, procedurally adapting to your tactics — meaning you need to constantly adapt to your enemies even as they adapt to you.
The game is already in early access via the Epic Games store, and opinions have been generally positive (apart from the usual review-bombing on Steam, because the game was on Epic). PC Gamer got on the first backer's build back in 2018 and were particularly excited by the more precise flanking that takes into account the angle of fire, plus the possibilities opened up by targeting different parts of an enemy to produce different effects. Here's some narrated gameplay from a much later backer build:
Phoenix Point also got a release date. It's coming to Xbox and PC on September 3rd, 2019.
We don't have them yet, but we'll publish a story as soon as we pick up the Phoenix Point achievements.
