[UPDATE] Square Enix has "No Plans" for FFVII Remake on Xbox

By Sam Quirke, 11 days ago
UPDATE: A Square Enix spokesperson has confirmed to Video Games Chronicle that "Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 on March 3rd 2020. We have no plans for other platforms." Of course, if part of the Sony timed exclusivity deal is to remain tight-lipped about the length of that exclusivity, Square Enix would naturally deny the erroneous posting. PlayStation will likely have the exclusive for at least a few months, but for now we can only speculate as to when Xbox players might be able to return to Midgar.

Original story:

While it's certainly not front-and-centre of the marketing material, we've known for a while that the Final Fantasy VII Remake was only a timed exclusive for PlayStation. But is it coming to Xbox, and when? There are new clues...

Xbox DACH, which represents Germany, Austria and Switzerland, posted the above images on Facebook, which were captured and shared on both ResetEra and Nibel's Twitter account before they were deleted. Maxi Gräff of the DACH team later replied to Nibel calling the post an "internal mistake".

It seems highly unlikely that PlayStation have somehow lost their timed exclusivity deal for the March 2020 release, which was still part of the Remake's PR spiel in the press releases following E3 2019. However given that someone on the DACH team has clearly made the effort to mock this up properly, it does suggest that we might be getting an announcement very soon — and that perhaps the timing was just wrong, or the date on the advert is wrong.

We have a few Xbox-heavy events coming up, starting with the flagship Microsoft Store opening event in London which includes several hours of live streaming tomorrow afternoon. There's also Gamescom coming up, which is often a space that Xbox likes to make some reasonably significant announcements within. Finally, there's X019 in London later this year, an Xbox-only event which seems perfect for announcing a firm reveal and release date for the Xbox One version.

Whatever you think of this particular leak or mistake, it certainly firms up hope that Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming to Xbox One. Up until now we only knew that PlayStation was getting it "first"; now it seems that Xbox will be getting it at some point, even if it's not in March.
