Apex Legends Players Are Tricking Consoles Into Allowing Mouse & Keyboard

By Sam Quirke, 2 months ago
Some Apex Legends players on console are getting an advantage due to a device that allows them to trick the console into reading their mouse and keyboard as a controller. The developers are not happy, and are actively looking at options to detect these spoofers, potentially banning them or at least forcing them to play against other players who are circumventing the rules.

Apex Legends is not one of the few Xbox One games that have mouse and keyboard support. According to several outlets, players are using the XIM Adapter to trick the Xbox One into thinking that the player is using a controller when they are actually using a mouse and keyboard. The XIM Adapter is more acceptably used to help gamers who need an alternative control scheme, but savvy players are using it to get an advantage, particularly because spoofing as a controller gives mouse and keyboard players access to aim assist. This technique actually pre-dates formal mouse and keyboard support on consoles, having already affected games like Overwatch and Fortnite.

Respawn have yet to make a clear and comprehensive decision on how to handle this form of unfair play — if they are even able to tackle it head one — but they have made a statement condemning the practice on the official subreddit:

Our stance on this? The short answer is: we don't condone it. We are investigating ways to detect if players are doing it that we're testing internally. That's all we have to say on it for now but we'll revisit this and talk about progress with detection and how we'll address players that are using it in the near future.
The question is whether formal mouse and keyboard support for the game on Xbox One would reduce the likelihood of players finding other, illegal means of spoofing the system, thereby allowing Respawn greater control of the functionality available to mouse and keyboard players. It would also mean that the developer could force players more easily into dedicated lobbies depending on their control method.
